The opportunity

The Digital Accessibility Officer provides expert advice, training, and technical support to staff and students with disabilities who use or could benefit from assistive technologies and alternative formats in their study and work. Working with Inclusion and Disability Services, HR, and other areas, the position responds to requests for assistance and runs consultations to demonstrate and discuss available options.

The role installs, configures, and supports software on clients' devices and provides ongoing training and support to enable equitable access to information and digital environments. It is also responsible for sourcing and converting learning materials into accessible formats, both in-house and through external providers, and supports the Digital Accessibility Lead in accessibility reviews and usability testing of digital assets to ensure they are inclusive and meet relevant accessibility guidelines.

What you'll do

• Provide expert advice, training and technical support to staff and students with disabilities on the use of assistive technologies, accessibility software and alternative formats to enable equitable participation in study and work.

• Conduct consultations to assess user needs, recommend appropriate assistive technology solutions, and deliver training on accessible technologies and digital accessibility tools.

• Install, configure, maintain and troubleshoot assistive technology hardware, accessibility software and related applications across a range of client devices.

• Source, prepare and convert learning materials into accessible formats, working with external providers where required to meet accessibility standards and user needs.

• Support the Digital Accessibility Lead in undertaking accessibility reviews, usability testing and assessments of digital systems, platforms and content to ensure compliance with accessibility standards.

• Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with stakeholders across the University, promoting digital accessibility best practice and providing ongoing support to improve inclusive learning and working environments.

What we're looking for

• Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or certifications in Information Technology, Digital Accessibility, Disability Services, Education or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant training and demonstrated experience.

• Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality documentation, including user guides, instructional materials, knowledge articles and technical manuals for a diverse range of users.

• Demonstrated foundational technical knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft 365 and common desktop applications, with the ability to learn, install, configure and support a range of software, assistive technologies and digital accessibility tools. Experience troubleshooting software in a customer-focused environment will be highly regarded.

• Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to students, academic and professional staff, and ICT colleagues through both written and verbal communication.

• Demonstrated understanding of digital accessibility principles and assistive technologies, including hardware and software solutions that support people with disabilities to access information, digital services and educational resources.

• Working knowledge of relevant Commonwealth legislation, standards and guidelines relating to disability inclusion, accessibility and the provision of services to people with disabilities in educational settings.

• Demonstrated experience providing information technology support in a customer-focused environment, preferably within a higher education or similarly complex organisation.
