Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer: Your goals. Our ambition

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Financial Crime Adviser to join our Australia & Asia Financial Crime team in our Sydney office. This is a permanent, full-time opportunity for an experienced financial crime professional to provide trusted advisory support, risk assessment expertise, and policy oversight across our offices in Australia and Asia. The role will play a key part in ensuring compliance with AML/CTF and sanctions obligations while supporting the business in managing financial crime risks in a complex and evolving regulatory environment.

What you’ll do

  • Provide day-to-day financial crime advise to practice groups and business units across Australia and Asia on AML/CTF and sanctions compliance obligations.

  • Support the ongoing maintenance, enhancement and governance of the firm’s AML/CTF policies, controls and procedures.

  • Monitor regulatory developments and industry trends, assessing impacts on the firm's financial crime framework and coordinating policy updates where required.

  • Review and assess higher-risk clients, matters and business initiatives, and act as an escalation point for unusual activity reports and other financial crime referrals.

  • Conduct risk assessments and gap analyses to identify potential financial crime risks, and develop remediation plans and controls.

  • Support responses to regulatory enquiries, audits and surveys, and prepare evidence and briefing materials for internal and external use.

  • Contribute to strategic initiatives that strengthen financial crime risk management, operational effectiveness and the use of emerging technologies.

What you’ll bring

  • A degree and minimum 6 years' experience in a regulated financial crime environment.

  • Technical expertise in applicable financial crime and AML/CTF regulations and legislation.

  • Excellent research and analytical skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.

  • An ability to handle complex and confidential matters with total discretion.

  • Excellent verbal, written and face-to-face communication skills.

  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritise multiple tasks simultaneously and deliver under pressure and to deadlines.

  • An innovative mindset, curious about AI and emerging technologies.

The Team

The Financial Crime team forms part of the New Business Intake and Enterprise Risk ("NBI & ER") function and is responsible for overseeing the firm's approach to AML/CTF, sanctions and financial crime risk management across Australia and Asia.

Our team partners with stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions to provide trusted advice, assess and manage financial crime risk, and ensure compliance with evolving regulatory requirements. Based primarily in Sydney and Melbourne, we work closely with colleagues across Asia and the UK, offering a unique opportunity to gain exposure to regional and global financial crime issues while contributing to the ongoing enhancement of the firm's risk and compliance framework.
