Description
Assists the school nurse with routine care of students by:
- Providing minor first aid care and performing first aid procedures according to established protocol
- Contributing data for the assessment of students’’ health complaints, such as initial complaint, temperature, general appearance
- Carrying out delegated nursing interventions and procedures, including assisting with an activity of daily living, when appropriate
- Answering phones; phoning parents and health care providers for the school nurse
- Covering the health office in the absence of the school nurse by addressing routine problems by established protocol and notifying the nurse of an non-routine, urgent or emergent problem
- Performs vision screenings; assists the nurse with all other screenings
- Assists with medical emergencies and other crises
- Maintains an organized, efficient and clean treatment area in the health office
- Inputting, maintaining, updating and generating reports from electronic student health records. Responsibilities include:
- Completing data entry tasks (e.g.: inputting students’ immunization, health assessments, sport’s physical and screening data)
- Documenting according to standard protocols all students visits handled by the health aide; assisting in documenting student visits manage by the school nurse (e.g.: inputting student’s name, initial complaint and time in/out)
- Preparing computer generated data reports and records on an as needed basis as directed by the school nurse or nursing supervisor
- Performs clerical tasks such as:
- Preparing mass notices/mailings
- Typing health plans and other type of notes, memoranda or letters for the school nurse
- Filing/retrieving records and other documents
- Carries out defined job responsibilities and delegated nursing tasks as directed; takes on other responsibilities as directed
- Competent computer skills especially in word processing and data inputting
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
- Possess effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills
- Conducts themselves in an appropriate manner at all times and with all persons, including students, staff, supervisors and parents
- Must have good judgement, reports observations and consults with the nurse at all appropriate times
- Must recognize their legal and clinical limitations as an unlicensed health care assistant and functions within the boundaries of the health aide role at all times
- Contributes as a team member to initiatives of the Health Department
- High School Graduate or equivalent
- Associates degree from an accredited college or university preferred
- Experience in area related to health, child care or office management desired
- Current certification in CPR, AED and First Aid-maintains certifications
Complete physical tasks such as:
- lifting (up to 25 lbs. alone; over 25 lbs. with assistance);
- kneeling on floor to assist nurse with injured student;
- administering CPR;
- assisting a physically impaired student to stand from sitting, pivot in place and sit from standing; and
- pushing a student (up to 200 lbs.) in a wheelchair.
19.5 HOURS per Week, 10 month schedule
