MUFG’s Milan Branch is a key part of the Group’s Global Corporate & Investment Banking (GCIB) franchise in Europe. The team partners with Italian corporates, multinational companies and financial institutions, delivering tailored solutions across corporate banking, transaction banking, structured finance and capital markets. Leveraging MUFG’s global network and sector expertise, the Milan GCIB team supports clients in achieving their strategic and sustainable growth ambitions.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

As a Director Relationship Manager GCIB you will:

  • Lead coverage of a portfolio of global corporate clients in Italy, owning the client relationship end-to-end and delivering the financial, risk and conduct targets set for the franchise. The Director acts as a senior representative of MUFG in the market, originates and executes complex transactions across the product platform, and deputises for the Head of GCIB Italy when required.
  • Core accountabilities
  • Own a portfolio of strategic corporate relationships and deliver individual financial and non-financial KPIs (Revenue, NOP, RoE, Expenses, BSO).
  • Shape and execute the Italy coverage strategy for global corporates jointly with the Head of GCIB Italy.
  • Originate, structure and close transactions across lending, DCM, hedging, transaction banking and advisory, leveraging the global MUFG network.
  • Own Credit, Market, Operational and Regulatory & Conduct risks attached to the role, as First Line of Defence.
  • Represent GCIB in local governance, regulatory and client-facing forums in the absence of the Department Head.
  • Coach junior coverage staff and contribute to the development of the Milan Branch as a centre of excellence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Strategy & Business Development

  • Define and implement the medium- and long-term coverage strategy for the assigned client segment in Italy, aligned with EMEA and Group priorities.
  • Translate strategy into an annual business plan, budget and client action plans, and track execution against KPIs.
  • Enhance MUFG's profile in Italy and EMEA through active market presence, industry events and thought leadership.
  • Partner with Product, Sector and International teams to maximise cross-sell and wallet capture.

Clients & Origination

  • Act as senior relationship owner for a dedicated portfolio of Italian and multinational corporates.
  • Build and maintain C-suite and Treasurer-level relationships; understand clients' strategic agenda, capital structure and financing needs.
  • Lead deal origination across lending (bilateral, syndicated, structured, acquisition and project finance), DCM, structured financing, derivatives, Global Transaction Banking and advisory.
  • Own account planning, pipeline management and pricing discipline; ensure CRM and deal screening processes are properly maintained.
  • Ensure client briefings, pitches and deliverables are prepared and quality-controlled ahead of client interactions.

Financial Performance

  • Deliver Gross Revenue, NOP, RoE and Balance Sheet Optimization targets for the portfolio and contribute to the Italy GCIB P&L.
  • Optimise capital and balance sheet usage; actively manage RWA, LCR and funding consumption in line with Group appetite.
  • Drive fee-based and capital-light revenue growth; monitor profitability at client and transaction level.

Risk, Credit & Conduct

  • Accountable for credit and market risk decisions within the portfolio; act as sponsor for credit applications and annual reviews.
  • Exercise sound judgement and maintain an open dialogue with Credit, Risk, Compliance and Legal; escalate emerging risks and potential breaches promptly.
  • Promote a strong risk and compliance culture as First Line of Defence, with zero tolerance for material breaches of policy, sanctions, AML/KYC and conduct frameworks.
  • Ensure full compliance with Bank of Italy, ECB, EBA and MUFG Group regulatory obligations.

Leadership & People

  • Act as a role model for MUFG Values and Cultural Principles; lead by example on integrity, professionalism and client focus.
  • Provide direction, coaching and development to junior bankers; contribute to hiring, performance management and succession planning.
  • Represent GCIB Italy with internal stakeholders across EMEA, the Americas and APAC, and with Branch management, Audit and Regulators.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 12–15 years of relevant corporate and investment banking experience, with a strong track record in senior client coverage of Italian corporates.
  • Proven deal execution across lending, DCM and structured finance; experience on acquisition, leveraged or project finance transactions.
  • Demonstrable P&L ownership and delivery against revenue, RoE and risk-adjusted performance targets.
  • Experience operating within a matrixed, international banking group, including interaction with Credit, Risk, Compliance and Product functions.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Functional / Technical Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of the Italian corporate market, key sectors (energy, telecoms, infrastructure, industrials) and the European regulatory environment.
  • Strong credit skills: ability to structure, negotiate and defend transactions through the credit process.
  • Solid understanding of capital, liquidity and accounting drivers of banking products (RWA, LCR/NSFR, IFRS 9).
  • Proven origination and execution capability across the CIB product suite.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and ability to operate credibly at C-suite and Board level.

Education / Qualifications

  • Degree-level education, ideally in Economics, Finance, Business, Accounting or Law. A post-graduate qualification (MBA, CFA, Master in Finance) is valued.
  • Fluent Italian and English; additional European languages are an advantage.

Salary Range: 180.000 - 210.000 EUR + BONUS
