Title:

Expression of Interest: Engineers Ready to Transition into Nuclear Facility and Infrastructure Design

Your Good Manufacturing Practice Experience Is More Transferable Than You Think

At KBR, we deliver science, technology and engineering solutions that help governments and businesses achieve some of their most complex objectives.

We are interested in connecting with engineers from pharmaceutical, biotechnology, life sciences and other highly regulated industries who may not have previously considered a career in nuclear facility and infrastructure design.

As Australia continues to invest in its future nuclear capability through AUKUS and broader sovereign infrastructure programs, we know the nuclear sector cannot rely solely on traditional nuclear talent pools. However, many of the skills required already exist in adjacent industries.

If you've spent your career designing cleanrooms, containment facilities, sterile manufacturing environments, active pharmaceutical ingredient production plants or other high-purity facilities, you've likely already solved many of the same engineering challenges faced within nuclear facility and infrastructure design.

The terminology is different, but the engineering discipline is familiar.

Why We're Interested in Speaking with You

Engineers from Good Manufacturing Practice environments bring experience in:

  • Contamination control and containment design
  • Cleanroom classification and pressure cascade management
  • Ventilation and environmental control systems
  • Risk-based engineering and structured safety reviews
  • Highly regulated project environments
  • Validation and verification processes
  • Quality management systems
  • Configuration and change control
  • Complex multidisciplinary capital projects

These same fundamentals are central to the design and delivery of nuclear facilities.

You won't be starting from zero. You'll be applying established engineering instincts in a different context, with support from experienced nuclear specialists (Nuclear Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel) and structured learning pathways designed to build sector-specific capability over time.

Areas of Interest

We're keen to hear from engineers who have experience in:

  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities
  • Biotechnology and life sciences infrastructure
  • Cleanroom and sterile production environments
  • High-containment processing facilities
  • Process engineering and facility design
  • HVAC and environmental control systems
  • Chemical and industrial processing facilities
  • Other highly regulated engineering environments

We are particularly interested in professionals from:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Process Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Building Services Engineering
  • Facilities Design
  • Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

What a Transition into Nuclear Could Look Like with KBR

Depending on your experience and interests, opportunities may arise across:

  • Nuclear facility design
  • Process and systems engineering
  • Containment and ventilation design
  • Safety and risk engineering
  • Design integration
  • Infrastructure and major projects delivery
  • Verification and validation activities
  • Technical assurance and compliance functions

You'll work alongside multidisciplinary teams delivering complex, nationally significant infrastructure while developing an understanding of nuclear safety principles, regulatory frameworks and operational requirements.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in hearing from engineers who can demonstrate:

  • Experience designing or delivering facilities within highly regulated industries
  • Familiarity with structured risk-review methodologies such as HAZOP, QRM or equivalent
  • A strong appreciation for quality, safety and compliance requirements
  • Experience operating within controlled-document and audited environments
  • Curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to learn
  • Eligibility to work in Australia and the ability to obtain relevant security clearances

Why Consider Nuclear?

Nuclear infrastructure offers the opportunity to:

  • Apply your existing expertise in a new and growing sector
  • Contribute to nationally significant, long-duration programs
  • Work on complex engineering challenges with a strong safety focus
  • Access structured technical development and mentoring
  • Build specialist skills that will be increasingly valuable in Australia's future workforce

For many engineers, the transition is less about learning an entirely new profession and more about learning a new application for skills they already possess.

Why KBR?

KBR’s Infrastructure Solutions Australia business offers a wide range of professional services to private and public sector clients delivering projects in both urban and remote environments across transport, water, environment, buildings, and Defence.

We are committed to social and environmental sustainability and delivering projects with a digital mindset that drives innovation within our business, for our customers and stakeholders. Our continued growth allows us to offer unrivalled opportunities to our staff in terms of career paths, development, and project exposure.

 What We Offer

  • Flexible work arrangements (start/finish times, WFH, flex time).
  • Salary packaging and novated leases.
  • Paid professional membership fees.
  • Life/Health insurance discounts.
  • Employee stock purchase plans.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Personal career development plans.
  • Growth and promotion opportunities.

 Register Your Interest

If your background is in pharmaceutical, biotech, life sciences or another high-containment engineering environment, and you're curious about where your experience could fit within Australia's future nuclear capability, we'd welcome a confidential conversation.

The regulatory language may be different. The engineering mindset is often the same.

KBR. Delivering solutions that make a difference.
