Under occasional supervision, provides leadership and supervision of assigned personnel during the performance of emergency medical services activities. Ensures prompt, professional, and appropriate response to medical emergencies and enforces compliance with applicable policies, procedures, medical protocols, and standards of quality and safety. Responds to emergency calls and provides emergency medical care at the paramedic level. Performs related duties as required. Reports to the Shift Manager.Provides leadership, direction, and supervision to assigned personnel; reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy, provides training, advice, and assistance as needed, and makes recommendations regarding employee performance and operational matters.

Inspects the assigned station and vehicle at the beginning of each shift to ensure cleanliness, sanitation, proper condition of equipment, and adequate inventory of supplies. Ensures deficiencies are addressed and notifies appropriate personnel of vehicle, equipment, supply, or facility maintenance needs.

Ensures assigned personnel comply with applicable policies, procedures, medical protocols, infection control requirements, and standards of quality and safety.

Accounts for controlled substances and ensures required inventory and accountability procedures are completed daily.

Drives the ambulance in response to emergency calls and ensures safe operation of the unit. Requests additional resources as necessary for the effective management of incidents and may serve as Incident Commander during mass-casualty incidents or other situations as assigned.

Provides advanced life support and emergency care to sick and injured patients in accordance with certification, medical protocols, and applicable regulations. 

Determines the nature and extent of illness or injury, monitors patient condition, and provides appropriate treatment and transportation to the receiving medical facility.

Performs emergency medical procedures including, but not limited to, immobilization and bandaging, CPR, airway management and intubation, cardiac monitoring, medication administration, cardioversion and defibrillation, IV therapy, needle decompression, and other procedures authorized by certification and medical protocols.

Communicates patient assessment findings, diagnostic signs, treatment provided, and changes in patient condition to appropriate medical personnel. Provides verbal and written patient care reports to receiving emergency department personnel upon arrival.

Assists with patient lifting, moving, and extrication, as well as other rescue procedures as necessary.

Notifies dispatch personnel and the Coroner's Office of patient deaths as required and takes appropriate measures to protect property and evidence at the scene.

Prepares patient care reports with patient billing information, station and unit reports, controlled substance accountability forms, checklists, and other required documentation. Ensures all required documentation for themself and assigned personnel is completed accurately and within established timelines.

Responds to complaints from the public concerning personnel or activities of the assigned unit and refers matters to the appropriate supervisor when necessary.

May coordinate special teams, programs, projects, or operational activities as assigned.

Receives and reviews physician orders, patient histories, shift reports, memos, and other information necessary to maintain operational awareness and provide appropriate supervision.

Uses policies and procedures, regulations, medical protocols, maps, equipment manuals, medical references, and other resources as necessary to perform assigned duties.

Operates emergency response vehicles and a variety of emergency medical, rescue, and specialized equipment necessary to provide patient care and perform emergency response operations. Utilizes medical supplies, medications, instruments, and hand tools as required. Operates two-way radios, telephones, and other communications equipment.

Maintains effective communication with supervisors, subordinates, coworkers, department Director, other County employees, medical and hospital personnel, law enforcement, fire department personnel, patients, students, bystanders, and members of the general public.

Remains available for emergency response as required by department policy and assignment.

Keeps abreast of advances in emergency medical services, technology, methods, regulations, and best practices. Attends meetings, conferences, continuing education, and training as required to maintain knowledge, skills, and certifications.

Performs detailed housekeeping and maintains the assigned station and vehicle in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition as required.

Participates in public education, community relations activities, and department events as required.

May serve as a Crew Chief while holding an Advanced EMT certification, provided the employee meets all other qualifications and obtains Paramedic certification within 24 months of appointment to Crew Chief.

Performs related duties as required.REQUIRED EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND JOB-RELATED EXPERIENCE:
 Minimum Level of Job-Related Education:
 Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
 
 Minimum Amount of Job-Related Experience:
 Two to four years of progressive experience in emergency medical service programs. Must complete required coursework and maintain EMT, Paramedic, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, CPR and department assigned emergency vehicle operator certifications, and any other certifications deemed necessary by department head. 
 
 Minimum Level of any Required Qualifications, Licenses, Certificates, Registrations, or any Relevant Knowledge, Job Skill or Equivalent Experience:
 Must possess a valid state driver's license.
