A Brief Overview
Provides optimal development and psychosocially appropriate care for pediatric patients and families. Assesses children's developmental and coping needs and implements developmentally appropriate therapeutic interventions such as play, medical play, psychological preparation and rehearsed coping to minimize distress associated with the healthcare environment. Collaborates as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team to develop and administer an individualized plan of care
What you will do
- Plans, initiates, and oversees activities that foster continued child growth and development based on information concerning the health care condition, developmental level and interest of the patient.
- Provides therapy, which prepares children for surgery, intrusive procedures, and/or general routines of hospitalization.
- Works collaboratively with other healthcare professionals and family. Observes, documents and reports relevant information with nursing staff, medical staff, and other professionals.
- Provides educational counseling and serves as resource to families and nursing staff regarding activities which are beneficial to the child based on illness, progress of growth, development, and pending procedure.
- Patient advocate in surgery areas with pediatric patients. Supports parents before and after child has gone to surgery.
- Maintains environment, toys, equipment and supplies, to ensure patient safety and to meet department standards.
- Assists with employee/student/volunteer on-the-job training and orientation.
- Promotes Family Centered Care: Orients families to the area and equipment.
Essential Qualifications

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
- Bachelor's Child life, child development or related field of study.
- Some College Completion of practicum/internship in child life
- Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) - Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) within 1 Year
Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
- Master's
