Project Manager - Ports, Maritime, and Coastal

Overview

Kimley-Horn’s Long Beach, CA office is actively seeking a seasoned Project Manager with 10+ years of experience in Ports, Maritime, and Coastal Engineering to join our Structures team. This is a dynamic, in-person role—remote work is not available. We’re searching for someone passionate about delivering exceptional waterfront and coastal infrastructure projects while exemplifying Kimley-Horn’s core values.

Responsibilities

As a Project Manager, you will lead and inspire teams to deliver innovative solutions for complex coastal and waterfront projects. Your responsibilities will include:

• Project Leadership: Manage a variety of coastal and waterfront projects from concept to completion, including marinas, piers, ports, and coastal infrastructure.
• Client Engagement: Serve as the main point of contact for clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies, ensuring clear communication and fostering collaborative decision-making throughout project delivery.
• Budget and Schedule Management: Oversee resource allocation while developing and maintaining project budgets and schedules to deliver exceptional, on-time, and on-budget results.
• Technical Expertise: Provide advanced structural engineering analysis and design for marine structures such as wharves, bulkheads, sheet pile walls, pile-supported platforms, and floating dock systems.
• Team Development: Supervise, mentor, and guide junior engineers and project team members, promoting professional growth and driving technical excellence that reflects Kimley-Horn’s high standards.
• Regulatory Navigation: Support waterfront permitting efforts, navigating frameworks such as USACE, CEQA/NEPA, the Coastal Commission, and other relevant regulatory bodies.
• Business Development: Identify opportunities to expand Kimley-Horn’s Coastal Waterfront Practice through strategic relationship-building, proactive client outreach, and innovative business development initiatives.
• Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams—environmental scientists, planners, and naval architects—to accomplish multi-disciplinary project goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Coastal, Structural, or Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field.
• 10+ years of experience in engineering and project management, with a demonstrated focus on coastal and waterfront infrastructure projects.
• Strong technical expertise in coastal and waterfront infrastructure systems, structural analysis/design, permitting, and regulatory compliance.
• Proven ability to successfully manage multi-disciplinary teams and consistently deliver exceptional client service.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, along with strong organizational and leadership abilities to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Professional Engineer (PE) license (multi-state license is a plus).
• Master’s degree in Structural, Coastal, or Environmental Engineering, or a related advanced program.
• Extensive experience in marine or coastal structural systems, including wharves, piers, sheet pile, pile foundations, bulkheads, or similar infrastructure.
• Familiarity with regulatory processes such as USACE Section 404/10, California Coastal Commission, CEQA/NEPA, and related frameworks.
• Proficiency with software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or structural analysis tools applicable to marine environments.
• Demonstrated success with business development, including client relationship management and contribution to winning project proposals.
• Experience supporting naval or military waterfront facility projects (e.g., NAVFAC, US Coast Guard) is a plus.

Salary Range:

$140,000 to $165,000
