Job Overview

The Director of the Center for Student Engagement promotes student involvement and furthers community on campus while linking academic life with co-curricular engagement.  This position represents student co-curricular involvement as an institutional priority in a variety of contexts, supervises the access to, and allocation of student organization benefits, works with faculty and student advisory boards and advises students.  The Director provides strategic leadership and management of a department of nine full-time program staff members, three part-time graduate assistants, and several student staff members. Professional staff on this team provide advising, program development and administrative support to over 250 student groups. Content areas include Student Organizations, Outdoor Education, Debate, New Student Orientation, Student Media, Student Government, Club Sports, the Georgetown Program Board, transition programs, and campus leadership programs.  The Director is responsible for overseeing budgets, operations, administrative management, and assessment of a wide variety of student-engagement programs. The Director convenes groups of peers and staff across the university to coordinate and standardize student engagement strategies across schools, departments and programs, in both curricular and co-curricular units.  This person is expected to set and uphold exemplary standards of practice for advising students, developing student leadership values and skills, innovating programs and services, and engaging a wide-variety of stakeholders in the support for co-curricular learning. 

Work Interactions

This position reports to the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Engagement as part of the Community and Identity Formation cluster within the Division of Student Affairs.  Others who report to the Senior Associate Vice President are the Executive Directors of the Center for Social Justice and the Academic Resource Center, the Director of the Office of Student Conduct, the Senior Director of Student Formation, and the Director of the Military and Veteran’s Resource Center.  The Director of the Center for Student Engagement attends the Student Affairs Directors’ meetings.  All student activities-related functions are reviewed by this position.   Directly reporting to this position are the Associate Director of Student Engagement, the Director of Outdoor Education, the Director of Orientation, Transition, and Family Engagement, and the Director of Policy Debate. 

The Director of the Center for Student Engagement must represent student co-curricular involvement as an institutional priority in a variety of contexts, ensuring that campus planning and policy support a strong campus life program that provides significant opportunity for overall growth and student leadership development.  The Director is responsible directly for over 250 student organizations, and indirectly for approximately 100 more reporting to other departments in the university.

The Director is responsible for establishing and implementing policy for all student organizations regarding events and projects on and off campus, seeking always to maintain co-curricular involvement as a learning experience for students.  The Director is responsible for anticipating, advising, and participating in the management of the institution’s risk and liability in student programming and its commitment to speech and expression.  This person manages a staff with diverse areas of involvement and expertise; therefore, the Director must remain current on issues across a wide variety of content areas. 

The Director is responsible for managing a fast paced, unpredictable environment while maintaining an educational focus.  The Director must establish clear standard procedures and policies and also develop a staff with maximum ability to exercise independent thinking and judgment.  The Director is responsible for the professional development of the staff.  This position is subject to extended work hours during peak weeks at high volume periods of the semester. 

Requirements and Qualifications

Requirements: 

• Master’s Degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs, human development, counseling or related discipline

• Minimum of 10 years of full-time, professional experience working with student organizations, student programs, college student leadership development or related functional area
• Familiarity with contemporary understanding of post-secondary student formation, development, and growth, particularly with regard to intersectional identity development and the value of on-campus engagement
• Familiarity and facility working with students as an advisor, supervisor, mentor, supporter, and educator 
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders on a broad range of projects 
• Strong organizational and communication skills   

Preferred qualifications: 

• Advanced or terminal degree in a discipline related to student development, leadership development, human development, or higher education; a terminal degree may substitute for three years of professional work experience

Understanding of the mission, vision, and context of Jesuit and Catholic higher education, particularly with regard to contextual influence on student formation  

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$66,783.00 - $126,720.23

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
