## About this Role

We are seeking an experienced Application DevOps & Modernisation Architect to lead large-scale application discovery, assessment, migration and modernisation initiatives. You will collaborate with business owners, application owners and technical specialists to understand objectives, functional and non-functional requirements, dependencies and constraints.

You will define practical modernisation strategies, evaluate solution options and translate application needs into secure, scalable and resilient platform designs. The role requires extensive expertise across application architecture, DevOps, cloud platforms, containerisation, infrastructure as code and continuous delivery.

## What you’ll do

• Lead application discovery and assessment across architecture, integrations, dependencies, databases, infrastructure and operational requirements.
• Facilitate discovery workshops, architecture reviews and technical discussions with business and technical stakeholders.
• Capture business objectives, functional requirements, non-functional requirements, constraints and expected outcomes.
• Define application migration and modernisation strategies using approaches such as Rehost, Replatform, Refactor, Retain, Retire and Repurchase.
• Research and evaluate solution options, recommending effective development and implementation patterns with an open-source-first approach where appropriate.
• Produce high-level designs, low-level designs, architecture diagrams, deployment models, dependency maps and technical recommendations.
• Translate application requirements into platform requirements covering compute sizing, storage, connectivity, load balancing, DNS, databases, security, high availability, disaster recovery and observability.
• Collaborate with platform, network, database, security and cloud architects to ensure infrastructure designs meet application requirements.
• Support solution implementation, migration, technical troubleshooting and post-migration stabilisation.
• Communicate architecture decisions, risks, trade-offs and recommended next steps clearly to business and technical audiences.
• Work independently across multiple technical workstreams while maintaining effective stakeholder collaboration.

## Who you are

### Essential experience and capabilities

• At least eight years of relevant experience across application architecture, DevOps, cloud, migration and modernisation.
• Strong experience in large-scale application discovery and assessment.
• Demonstrated ability to take ambiguous requirements through discovery, option evaluation and recommendation.
• Strong knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, CI/CD, Git and GitOps.
• Extensive public cloud experience with AWS, Microsoft Azure and/or Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience designing for networking, databases, identity and access management, security, secrets management, high availability, disaster recovery and observability.
• Excellent communication, consulting, analytical and stakeholder-management skills.
• Strong problem-solving capabilities and the ability to work independently across concurrent technical workstreams.

### Desirable experience

• Understanding of application development using Java, Spring Boot, .NET, Node.js or Python.
• Experience with APIs, microservices and modern application integration patterns.
• Hands-on knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform and CI/CD tooling.
• Experience with Amazon EKS, Azure AKS or Google GKE.
• Experience with GitOps tools such as Argo CD.
• Familiarity with evaluating open-source technologies for maturity, scalability, security, supportability and licensing.
• Relevant AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes or Terraform certifications.
