The Tooele County Sheriff's Office is seeking a qualified and experienced law enforcement professional to serve as a Lieutenant within the Sheriff's Office. This position provides an opportunity to serve in a key leadership role within the Sheriff's Office, supporting the Sheriff in the overall operation, administration, and management of the agency. The Lieutenant will provide leadership and direction to personnel while helping ensure the effective delivery of law enforcement and public safety services throughout Tooele County.

General Purpose

Under the direction of the Sheriff, the Lieutenant is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and overseeing various operations and functions of the Tooele County Sheriff's Office.

The Lieutenant may be assigned responsibility for supervising patrol, investigations, jail operations, court services/transportation, and court bailiffs, as well as other divisions or functions as determined by the Sheriff. The position will work closely with the Sheriff on operational and administrative matters and will assist in implementing the goals, policies, and priorities of the Sheriff's Office.

Important Note: This is a non-career service position. Members appointed to administrative positions may be removed from such positions at any time by the Sheriff without cause.

Position Duties:

The Lieutenant may be responsible for the following:

• Provides leadership, supervision, and direction to Sheriff's Office personnel.
• Prepares and oversees employee work schedules to ensure appropriate staffing and operational coverage.
• Reviews and approves timesheets and other personnel-related documentation as required by the Human Resources Office.
• Assists with the recruitment, selection, and hiring of new personnel.
• Conducts and participates in employee performance evaluations and reviews.
• Recommends and administers appropriate corrective or disciplinary action in accordance with Sheriff's Office policies and applicable law.
• Monitors Sheriff's Office records and ensures accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable requirements.
• Oversees quality assurance efforts and identifies opportunities to improve operational effectiveness.
• Monitors and analyzes workload, staffing, and operational data and makes recommendations regarding staffing and scheduling as needed.
• Assists the Sheriff in developing, implementing, reviewing, and enforcing Sheriff's Office policies and procedures.
• Ensures personnel operate in compliance with applicable federal and state laws, Utah POST requirements, and Tooele County ordinances and policies.
• Assists the Sheriff with administrative, operational, and special projects as assigned.
• Responds to significant incidents and provides leadership and direction as necessary.
• Maintains availability for emergency and operational matters and serves in an on-call capacity as assigned.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Sheriff.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Graduation from high school or possession of a recognized high school equivalent.
• Must maintain Utah POST certification as required by Utah State law.
• Demonstrated knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, Utah statutes, and local ordinances.
• Demonstrated leadership experience as a sworn law enforcement officer with a public safety organization, including service at the rank of Sergeant or above.

• An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position.
