Job Description
Overview
AtkinsRéalis is one of the world’s most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies, with over 50,000 employees worldwide. We offer the opportunity to work on high-profile, technically challenging projects that shape the built environment and support future generations. Drawing on a diverse skill set and a strong track record of delivery, we play a leading role in complex engineering projects across sectors including Aviation, Energy, Cities and Development, Education, Transportation and Defence.
AtkinsRéalis’ Engineering and Design Practice is looking for a motivated Mechanical Building Services Engineer to join our team and further develop their career in a collaborative, high-performing environment. We have openings in our London office offering the opportunity to join a national delivery team and work with designers across the UK and internationally through our Global Technology Centre. This opportunity involves working as part of a national practice of Building Design professionals, delivering engineering design solutions to clients across the UK. The role offers exposure to a broad range of sectors, with experience in Commercial, Defence, Energy, Education and Healthcare particularly beneficial.
The role offers opportunities for client interaction while also being involved in the day-to-day design and delivery of projects. It is an excellent opportunity for an engineer to broaden their technical capability, gain valuable project experience and develop client-facing skills within a leading building design consultancy. Our Building Services Engineering team won the "Building Performance Consultancy (over 300 employees)" award at the CIBSE Building Performance Awards 2025.
Our focus is on developing our people to realise their full potential, with development plans tailored to individual needs and aspirations. This role offers the opportunity to build on existing technical strengths while developing digital capability, project management skills and broader career progression within the practice, supported by experienced colleagues across our national team.
Energy and carbon are central to this position and, with the growing importance of decarbonising the built environment, improving air quality and delivering energy-efficient design solutions, our team is expanding to meet increasing client demand for sustainable, high-performing buildings and future-ready engineering solutions.
Our Practice is committed to developing new ways of working through emerging digital technology and the global reach offered by an organisation of our scale and capability. Our ideal candidate will bring strong technical skills, an enquiring mindset and the potential to contribute to the continued growth of our digital practice, while developing broader project delivery and coordination skills within local and remote teams.
Your role
The role can be varied depending on projects and, although not limited, duties are likely to include:
- Undertake the design and specification of all mechanical building services systems, from concept through to detailed design, including heating, cooling, ventilation and public health systems.
- Carry out detailed calculations using industry-standard software tools, including Excel, IES, Hevacomp and MEPworx.
- Prepare technical specifications, design reports and presentations to support effective project delivery.
- Collaborate with our BIM team to develop models and drawings, with a working understanding of Revit.
- Represent AtkinsRéalis at meetings with clients and other professionals.
- Carry out condition surveys, inspections, and support the monitoring of installation and commissioning activities.
- Manage your assigned workload and deliver work to a high standard, within agreed deadlines and budgets.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing and support less experienced team members where appropriate.
About you
- Relevant experience in Mechanical Building Services Engineering, with a strong interest in design excellence and delivering high-quality sustainable building design solutions.
- A proactive and enquiring approach, with an interest in exploring new ideas, digital tools and ways of working that improve design quality and project outcomes.
- Degree qualified, or equivalent qualification, in Building Services Engineering / Mechanical Engineering, or related subjects.
- Working towards Chartered Membership of CIBSE, IMechE, or an equivalent professional body, with a clear interest in continued professional development.
- Experience of industry-standard software and tools such as IES, Hevacomp, StabiCAD, Revit, NBS and Microsoft packages. Knowledge of thermal modelling for compliance and design optimisation would be beneficial.
- Knowledge of UK technical standards and codes of practice.
- Familiar with energy reduction methods and approaches to decarbonising new and existing buildings.
- Awareness of energy and carbon-related data capture and analytics, with an interest in improving building performance and supporting low-carbon design.
- Experience of designing for measurement and verification, including commissioning and post-installation evaluation of performance.
