Hiring Unit:
The Career Planning Service (CaPS) supports McGill students and recent alumni in the exploration of their career options. This includes not only internships but also permanent, part-time, and summer job searches. CaPS also help students develop lifelong career management skills by providing workshops, individual advising, a comprehensive job posting service, and an extensive Career Resource Centre.
Position Summary:
This position supports a variety of projects and services related to career planning and professional development for McGill students. Specific roles and duties will vary depending on the projects assigned. Generally, Peer Career Educators will
- Provide information on career-related topics to students (e.g. answer questions, give presentations)
- Review career-related documents (e.g. application materials for grad school) in one-on-one consultations and provide verbal feedback
- Represent CaPS at events around campus to explain CaPS services
- Develop and update existing resources on career-related topics (e.g. guides, handouts, checklists, workshop slides)
- Support career-related programming for students (e.g. assist in setting up workshops and events, manage registration tables at career fairs, co-facilitate workshops or other events)
- Projects will be discussed with each peer educator to find a mix of assignments that suits the peer career educator’s strengths and areas of desired growth while serving CaPS’s operational needs.
Qualifications
- Current McGill student
- Pursuing a Master’s, PhD, or Postdoc (all disciplines are welcome)
- Work Study eligible for the 2026-2027 academic year (please submit work study approval letter with application)
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Awareness of graduate school application processes (professional tracks like medical school or law school are an asset)
- Experience in a student-facing role that required professionalism and an ability to work independently (both paid and volunteer experience are valued. Paid work experience in a university setting is an asset)
- Strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated tact and sensitivity in working with students or clients.
- Ability to engage and support students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and contribute to inclusive and equitable services for students.
- Awareness of McGill Student Services and engagement opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students
- Knowledge of English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #3 (spoken, advanced) and at a level #2 (written, intermediate) on a scale of 0-4.
Assets
- Experience providing feedback on student writing (e.g. grading student work, tutoring)
- Excellent reading and writing skills in French
- Available to work in person at CaPS on Tuesday and Friday afternoons
