Principal Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker (11940, Grade HL5)

The Montgomery County Department of Parks—Southern Parks Division seeks energetic, high-performing Principal Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker to join the division’s Playground Repair Unit located in Rockville, MD.

Under general supervision, performs playground inspection, maintenance, and repair work to ensure sites are safe, functional, and well-maintained. Conducts safety inspections, performs preventative maintenance and repairs, maintains EWF surfacing, and operates non-CDL trucks, tools, and maintenance equipment. Manages work orders through the EAM system, maintains tools and materials, and works closely with Playground Safety Specialists on a diverse team to support playground safety and compliance. May provide guidance to career and seasonal staff. Follows established safety procedures, secures work sites, completes required training, and performs other duties as assigned. The position offers training, growth opportunities, and a primarily day-shift schedule with occasional nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

The Southern Parks Division supports both local and regional recreation across some of the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County. The division maintains over 200 parks and operates a large fleet of equipment to keep park facilities, athletic fields, trails, and playgrounds safe, functional, and ready for daily use.

Playground Maintenance and Repair

• Inspect playgrounds and identify safety and maintenance needs.
• Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on playground equipment and surfacing.
• Maintain Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) surfacing and related site features.
• Complete work safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established standards.
• Perform general, seasonal, and emergency maintenance activities as assigned.

Vehicle, Equipment, Tools, and Materials Management

• Safely operate tools, equipment, and non-CDL vehicles to support maintenance activities.
• Maintain tools, parts, supplies, and material inventories.
• Inspect, clean, and perform routine maintenance on assigned tools and equipment.

Work Order Management and Documentation

• Manage and complete work orders through the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system.
• Document labor, materials, inspections, repairs, and completed work.
• Maintain accurate records and provide updates on maintenance activities.

Safety and Site Management

• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
• Secure work sites and protect visitors and staff during maintenance activities.
• Follow safety policies, procedures, and equipment operating standards.
• Respond to emergencies, safety concerns, and hazardous conditions.

Important Working Characteristics  

• Knowledge of park and facility maintenance practices, equipment, and safety procedures.
• Experience operating maintenance equipment, vehicles, and hand and power tools.
• Skill in performing maintenance and repair work across a variety of trades and grounds maintenance activities.
• Ability to assess maintenance needs, troubleshoot issues, and work independently.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain positive working relationships.

Working Conditions

• Primarily works outside but may work inside on occasion or as assigned. 
• Exposure to various elements and all types of weather conditions, waste, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g.: bees, hornets, wasps etc.). 
• Work requires constant kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting, and the ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.  
• An essential employee required to be on-call 24 hours for any emergencies. 
• Must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as necessary.

1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
2. Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.  
4. Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.  
5. Pass Commission medical examination. 
6. Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions in this class require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including: 

• Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment; 
• Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Fertilizer Applicator certification; and 
• National Playground Safety Institute certification.
