Senior Design Engineer – Electrical – SMTT

Job Summary:  

The Senior Design Engineer LV Switchgear Engineer serves as the senior technical authority for the electrical architecture, design governance, validation strategy, industrialization, and lifecycle support of low-voltage power distribution products and systems (<1kV). The Senior Design Engineer will manage multiple projects. 

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

• This position has no supervisory responsibilities. 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

• Drive critical engineering decisions that optimize product cost, performance, manufacturability, schedule, quality, reliability, serviceability, and safety. 

• Serve as the engineering representative for customer technical reviews, architecture discussions, issue resolution, and product development decisions. 

• Lead Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Test (DFT), Design for Reliability (DFR), Design for Serviceability (DFS), and Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE) initiatives. 

• Define and oversee electrical validation and qualification strategies including dielectric testing, lightning impulse testing, temperature-rise testing, short-circuit testing, relay protection verification, controls validation, FAT, SAT, and arc-flash evaluations. 

• Provide expert support for commissioning, field troubleshooting, corrective actions, and complex field issue resolution activities. 

• Lead high-impact technical risk reviews, root-cause investigations, corrective actions, design governance reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives. 

• Mentor engineers, review technical deliverables, and develop reusable standards, design guides, checklists, templates, and best practices for LV electrical engineering execution. 

• Develop single line diagrams for LV and LV distribution systems from utility interface through to MCCs and final distribution boards; prepare equipment arrangement and layout drawings, cable schedules, tray routing, and underground duct bank designs. 

• Specify LV switchgear, LV switchboards, MCCs, distribution panelboards, transformers, bus ducts, VFDs, UPS systems, and standby generator packages; prepare electrical area classification drawings and specify hazardous area equipment to NEC/CEC 500. 

• Lead concept and detailed design of power systems using busbar, cables, and wire harnesses. 

• Assist in other duties as required.

Education and Experience: 

• A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering is required.  

• A master's in electrical engineering is preferred. 

• At least 5 years of related experience is required. 

• PE Certification is desirable. 

• Experience with UL508A panel board, VFD is preferred. 

• Working knowledge of Low Voltage equipment and product application principles. 

• Working knowledge of UL/ETL certification process and working knowledge of other certifying agencies such as, CSA, and CE. (UL67, UL508A, UL 891, UL1558) 

• Working knowledge of electrical standards NFPA 70E (NEC) & IEEE 1584 to prepare arc flash hazard analysis. 

• Knowledge in in 2D and 3D CAD systems and  design simulation software. 

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
