Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco — John N. Callander Administrative Office

San Francisco, CA | Full-Time | Exempt | In-person

$100,000 - $110,000 / year | Benefits Eligible

Why This Role Matters

Since 1891, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) has provided high-quality, community-based youth development services to youth in San Francisco. Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. We impact the lives of Club members, primarily ages 6 to 18, by focusing on academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character, community engagement, and job readiness with earning potential. We are nationally recognized for the high quality of our programs and comprehensive approach to serving youth. Whether you’re joining our administrative team, a Clubhouse team, a school-based team, or our Camp Mendocino team, you’ll be surrounded by enthusiastic, talented, and passionate colleagues who wake up every day ready to inspire young people to reach their full potential.

What You’ll Do

The Director of Institutional Gifts oversees funding strategies for key government and foundation sources in close partnership with the VP of Institutional Gifts. Managing a multi-year portfolio of critical public contracts and private grants, the Director provides strategic and operational leadership across the full grants lifecycle—from proposal development to project implementation and reporting. Supervising the Grants Manager, this role builds strong external relationships with government agencies, city departments, foundations, and nonprofit partners while driving cross-departmental coordination across Executive, Program, Finance, and Outcomes teams.

  • Government Fundraising & Portfolio Management
    • Develop and execute a streamlined process to lead the government grants portfolio, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and program priorities.
    • Own SFUSD fundraising components, providing guidance and oversight to internal teams.
    • Partner with the President and Director of Advocacy & Government Relations to engage in public/citywide meetings, increase organizational visibility, influence policy, and foster informal coalitions.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Advocacy & Government Relations and city department leaders to streamline government grant administration.
    • Direct weekly cross-departmental SYNC meetings to review grant statuses, troubleshoot challenges, and ensure full alignment with the Finance Department.
  • Foundations Fundraising & Portfolio Management
    • Manage a portfolio of major foundation donors, developing cultivation and solicitation strategies for multi-year funding and gift growth.
    • Conduct face-to-face donor visits and site tours for institutional funders.
    • Drive donor stewardship in partnership with the Senior Director of Major Gifts & Donor Relations and the President; support capacity and capital campaigns.
    • Partner with the Outcomes Team to ensure high-integrity tracking of youth participation against grant objectives.
    • Collaborate with Clubhouse/program staff on grant deliverables and partner with Finance to build grant budgets and a centralized annual program budget bank.
  • Grant Writing & Prospecting
    • Proactively identify and cultivate city, state, federal, foundation, and capital funding opportunities to expand the diversified grant pipeline.
    • Build strategic relationships with institutional partners to identify opportunities ahead of formal solicitations.
    • Lead the drafting and submission of select competitive grant proposals and supporting materials.
    • Secure capital funding for Camp Mendocino and Clubhouse projects that enhance program quality, safety, capacity, or cost-efficiency.
    • Partner with Marketing to align messaging, share digital assets, and produce compelling stewardship materials.
  • Administration, Reporting & External Relations
    • Supervise, guide, and evaluate the performance of the Grants Manager.
    • Oversee quality control of the monthly Institutional Gifts dashboard and lead monthly team check-ins.
    • Maximize Salesforce CRM reporting and maintain alignment between Salesforce and Oracle NetSuite (ERP).
    • Co-lead reports and strategic discussions for the Board Resource Development Committee and Foundation Task Force.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent professional experience
  • Proven track record of securing multi-year six figures from private foundations and public agencies
