Description

- Perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of the most difficult and complex heavy construction and maintenance equipment such as compressors, cement mixers, skip loaders, knuckle boom, bucket trucks, and various other equipment, in support of a variety of maintenance and construction activities, including excavating, grading, loading, municipal solid waste, recycling, debris removal and related operations.
- Participate in all required training classes both in the classroom and in the field and practice all safety rules and procedures; exhibit safe movements while operating trucks and equipment.
- Participate in the repair and maintenance of City owned properties such as parks, cemeteries, streets, roads, alleyways, and/or drainage systems; transport and deliver heavy equipment from construction sites, maintenance facilities, storage yards and/or other locations as required.
- Participate in the collection, driving, hauling and disposal of municipal solid waste and/or yard debris at the appropriate landfill or transfer facility; clean debris from ditches, culverts and creek beds; collect and haul trash and yard debris, garbage, debris, dirt, sand and gravel.
- Perform additional grounds maintenance, construction and maintenance tasks such as reading grades/slope stakes, leveling, surfacing, concrete work, truck driving, asphalt spreading, jack-hammering, excavate drainage ditches and back-fill jobs upon completion and other related tasks.
- Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; maintain records and logs of all work performed, perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and perform basic preventative maintenance on equipment as required.
- Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and others as needed through all methods of communication technology including but not limited to radios, digital phones and on board communication devices.
- Respond as needed before/after and during emergencies, weather events, etc. utilizing spreaders and snow removal equipment including front-end loaders, snowplows, tractors ect.
- Respond to public inquires in a courteous manner; investigate and respond to complaints from the public; resolve issues in the area of assignment.

Experience:
Two years of experience involving the skilled operation of refuse equipment or heavy construction and maintenance equipment in parks, cemeteries, horticultural environments, street repair/maintenance or related field.
Training:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS
Required:
Possession of a Class B CDL, ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months of hire, and ability to maintain insurability. Ability to obtain a Forklift certification within six months. Applicants with an active Class A CDL are preferred.
Preferred:
Flagger Training certification; Confined Space Entry certification; Work Zone Safety certification; FEMA training certification; First Aid certification; Jet Rodder training completion; Lift Truck Instructor certification; Trenching certification; AED certification.
From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last approximately 4 - 6 weeks. The process will consist of a panel interview with the selected candidate being subject to a pre-employment drug screen, DOT physical, physical abilities test, background check and driving history check.
