The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, and facilitating and regulating development activities. The Department is committed to high-quality service, and partnering with the community, and providing an excellent environment in which to work.The total salary range for Associate Engineering Technician classification is $88,015.20- $107,103.36.  

This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is currently seeking to fill one (1) full-time Associate Engineering Technician vacancy with the Transportation and Hydraulic Services (THS) Division and one (1) full-time Associate Engineering Technician vacancy with the Development Services (DS) Division. 

•Development Services (DS) provides permitting services for development projects and reviews plans and issues of permits for the construction of utility infrastructure and encroachment on City streets. This division is also responsible for managing several programs and ensuring project compliance with local and state regulations, including storm water, flood hazard zones, geologic hazard zones, grading and erosion control, mapping, street and easement vacation, special assessment districts, and transportation and traffic analysis.

•Engineering Services (ES) is comprised of four sections: Construction Management Services, Structural Engineering and Code Inspection, Material Testing Laboratory, and Survey. This division provides technical support services for Capital Improvement Projects, development/utility permit projects, inspection oversight, Underground Service Alert (USA) services, land surveying, monument preservation services, field and laboratory testing, pavement design and evaluations, and building code inspection services. 

•Transportation and Hydraulic Services (THS) is responsible for the design, construction, and master plan of bridges, culverts, streets, sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewers, pump stations, streetlights, landscape and hardscape improvements, traffic signals, and supports construction and engineering, upgrade, and revitalization of the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. 

Key Responsibilities 
(Dependent upon the position/discipline for which they may be selected.) 
•Provide engineering support to project teams and managers. 
•Interface and coordinate intra-departmentally as well as with other City staff, outside agency staff, utility company staff, and/or the private development community. 
•Perform technical planning and research, basic design approach, and the layout of assigned projects including civil, electrical mechanical, and hydraulic provisions. 
•Prepare engineering drawings, contract specifications, and cost estimates. 
•Review a variety of construction plans, as built drawings, and cost estimates for compliance and/or consistency with project specifications and requirements. 
•Perform roadway, building, landscaping, and other project drafting, including structural detailing for final plans. 
•Perform sub-professional engineering, architectural, and landscape architectural studies of moderate difficulty for projects. 
•Conduct geological and historical research; review soil reports that describe soil condition, type, seismic hazards, and related factors. 
•Operate and utilize a variety of specialized software programs relevant to work performed. 
•Prepare graphical documents for reports and presentations. 
•Organize, acquire, and maintain office records and file information. 
•Review planning applications, traffic impact analysis reports, grading permits, subdivision maps, and street improvement plans for private development projects in accordance with adopted City Council policies and Public Works standards. 
•Provide excellent customer service by responding promptly, communicating clearly, giving guidance, and maintaining a positive attitude.  
•Utilize AutoCAD to prepare and revise sanitary sewer plans, profiles, details, record drawings, and other engineering drawings.
•Utilize ArcGIS Pro to research, analyze, and map sanitary sewer infrastructure and prepare project location maps and exhibits.

Education: Completion of high school, or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate). 
 
Experience: Four (4) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering/technical support experience of which two (2) years of experience includes performing materials sampling and testing, drafting and developing plans and specifications, construction or infrastructure inspections, traffic engineering, or field surveying. 
 
Acceptable Substitutions: Successful completion of two (2) academic years or sixty (60) semester units of college level engineering technology courses or related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the two (2) of four (4) years of sub-professional engineering/technical support experience.  There will be no substitute for the two (2) years of experience performing materials sampling and testing, drafting and developing plans and specifications, construction or infrastructure inspections, traffic engineering, or field surveying. 
 
Required Licensing: Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.
