Maintenance Assistant - Camp Wabak

Making an Impact Behind the Scenes – Girl Scouts of South Carolina - Mountains to Midlands is seeking to fill a full-time, hands-on Maintenance Assistant position to support the care and maintenance of our overnight Camp WaBak located in Marietta, SC just outside of Travelers Rest. This position plays an important role in providing safe, clean, and welcoming camp environments by supporting grounds, maintenance, facility upkeep, custodial services, and seasonal property operations.

Working under the direction of the Camp Ranger/Site Manager, the Maintenance Assistant helps maintain buildings, grounds, equipment, and outdoor spaces while supporting property-use activities and special events. This position is typically scheduled Monday through Friday during regular business hours, with occasional weekend work to support site users and special events.  During camp events and summer camp season, the schedule may be adjusted to align with camper arrivals, departures, and program needs.

What You'll Do

Facility & Building Maintenance

• Assist with routine building maintenance and minor repairs involving plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general construction.
• Conduct facility inspections to identify maintenance needs, damage, leaks, safety concerns, and weather-related impacts.
• Perform preventative maintenance tasks to help keep buildings, vehicles, and equipment in safe working condition.
• Assist with minor roofing repairs, rooftop inspections, and debris removal.

Grounds & Property Care

• Maintain grounds through mowing, trimming, trail clearing, debris removal, minor road repairs, and seasonal landscape upkeep.
• Support tree and brush removal, storm cleanup, and ice or snow mitigation as needed.
• Participate in seasonal site opening and closing activities, including winterization and equipment preparation.

Custodial & Janitorial Services

• Clean and disinfect cabins, restrooms, offices, kitchens, meeting spaces, and other facilities.
• Remove trash and recycling and maintain clean, sanitary common areas.
• Monitor and replenish custodial supplies and ensure proper storage and use of cleaning products.

Program & Event Support

• Prepare facilities and outdoor spaces for camps, events, rentals, and volunteer activities.
• Assist with setup, breakdown, furniture movement, equipment transport, and site cleanup.
• Support campers, volunteers, and guests by helping maintain a safe, welcoming environment.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all council safety procedures, emergency protocols, and chemical-handling requirements.
• Adhere to American Camp Association (ACA) standards, Safety Activity Checkpoints, and applicable health and sanitation regulations.
• Report hazards, maintenance concerns, and opportunities for improvement promptly.
• Serve as an on-call resource and emergency contact for assigned shifts.

Requirements

What we’re looking for:

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid South Carolina driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Ability to pass a background check.
• Active Girl Scout membership (may be obtained upon hire).

Preferred Qualifications

• One or more years of experience in maintenance, groundskeeping, custodial services, facilities support, or a related field.
• Experience operating maintenance equipment, power tools, lawn equipment, or custodial equipment.
• Experience working in camp, parks, recreation, hospitality, or outdoor environments.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Basic knowledge of building maintenance, grounds care, custodial practices, and equipment operation.
• Ability to safely use tools, equipment, and cleaning products.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with staff and volunteers.
• Strong attention to safety, cleanliness, and detail.
• Basic computer skills, including email and Microsoft Office applications, or willingness to learn.
• Willingness to complete required training and certifications, including Certified Pool Operator (CPO) training.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to walk uneven terrain, climb ladders, bend, kneel, reach, and perform physical labor.
• Ability to lift, carry, and move supplies, equipment, and materials consistent with the essential functions of the position.
