Thermal Management Systems Engineer
Position Summary
Analog Devices is seeking a Thermal Management Systems Engineer to join the Datacenter Infrastructure team. Datacenter infrastructure encompasses the hardware and supporting systems required for data center operation, including servers, networking equipment, power delivery and energy storage systems, and air and liquid-cooling systems.
The engineer will contribute to the design, analysis, prototyping, validation, and optimization of thermal management systems for small and large-scale data center infrastructure. The role will focus on sensing, monitoring, and control of temperature, pressure, flow rate, pumps, fans, and valves, using Analog Devices technologies where applicable.
The successful candidate will work with mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, systems, applications, and marketing teams to translate system requirements into practical technical solutions. The position is intended for an engineer who can execute defined technical work independently, contribute to customer-facing demonstrations and proof-of-concept platforms, and grow toward ownership of subsystem-level activities under the guidance of senior technical staff.
Job Scope
· Industry focus: Thermal management systems for data center infrastructure.
· Territory focus: Worldwide, with collaboration across global engineering, business, and customer teams.
· Function: Support system engineering activities in thermal sensing, monitoring, control, simulation, prototyping, and validation.
· Level: P2/P3 individual contributor role. Scope and independence will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience.
Principal Responsibilities
· Contribute to the development and evaluation of thermal management architectures for data center servers, power systems, energy storage systems, coolant distribution units, and associated infrastructure.
· Perform thermal, fluid-flow, and system-level analysis to assess performance, identify design limitations, and support design optimization.
· Develop and execute laboratory test plans for thermal and liquid-cooling systems, including instrumentation, data acquisition, data processing, and results interpretation.
· Support the design and integration of temperature, pressure, flow-rate, pump, fan, and valve monitoring and control functions.
· Develop proof-of-concept hardware, reference platforms, and demonstrations that show how Analog Devices technologies can address data center thermal-management challenges.
· Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, applications, and systems engineers to define requirements and integrate sensing and control functions at system level.
· Create simulation models, engineering calculations, test procedures, technical reports, presentations, and other design documentation.
· Support design reviews, failure investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action activities related to thermal performance and system operation.
· Evaluate technical literature, standards, market information, and emerging cooling technologies relevant to data center infrastructure.
· Support customer engagements by preparing technical analyses, demonstrations, and application-level recommendations in collaboration with senior engineers and commercial teams.
Minimum Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Thermal Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
· Relevant experience in thermal engineering, electronics cooling, fluid systems, HVAC, power electronics, data center infrastructure, or a closely related field.
· For P2 consideration, typically 2 or more years of relevant industry experience; for P3 consideration, typically 4 or more years of relevant industry experience. Equivalent advanced education and applicable project experience may be considered.
· Working knowledge of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and engineering measurement principles.
· Experience planning or executing engineering analysis, simulation, laboratory testing, or prototype validation.
· Ability to analyze technical data, document conclusions, and communicate recommendations clearly.
· Ability to work effectively in cross-functional and geographically distributed teams.
Preferred Qualifications
· Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant engineering discipline.
· Experience with CFD or electronics-cooling simulation tools such as Ansys Fluent, Ansys Icepak, FloEFD, FloTHERM, or equivalent.
· Knowledge of liquid-cooling systems, including cold plates, coolant distribution units, pumps, heat exchangers, valves, manifolds, piping, and leak-detection methods.
· Experience with thermal instrumentation and data acquisition, including thermocouples, RTDs, pressure sensors, flow sensors, and associated signal conditioning.
· Familiarity with feedback control, PID control, embedded systems, firmware interfaces, or industrial communication protocols.
· Programming or scripting experience using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools for data analysis, automation, or model development.
· Experience with electronics, power systems, servers, racks, or data center cooling infrastructure.
· Experience developing customer demonstrations, reference designs, application notes, or technical presentations.
Core Competencies
· Strong engineering fundamentals and structured problem-solving ability.
· Hands-on approach to analysis, experimentation, prototyping, and troubleshooting.
· Ability to work independently on defined assignments while seeking guidance when scope, risk, or technical complexity requires escalation.
· Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to present technical information to multidisciplinary audiences.
· Curiosity about emerging data center technologies and motivation to develop system-level expertise.
