As an Archaeologist, you will conduct archaeological and historical research, perform archaeological surveys and excavations, monitor construction projects, and prepare archaeological reports and plans. You will work statewide as part of the State Parks archaeology team, supporting projects related to park construction, resource management, historic preservation, and interpretation.
This position offers the opportunity to work in a wide variety of settings, from remote wilderness areas to urban parks, and to study sites ranging from pre-contact Hawaiian settlements to historic properties associated with the Hawaiian monarchy. You will also have opportunities to support interpretive and volunteer programs that promote the preservation, appreciation, and understanding of Hawai‘i’s cultural and historic resources.
The Division of State Parks manages nearly 30,000 acres across five major islands, including approximately 50 state parks, scenic waysides, and historic sites. These properties include culturally and historically significant places such as heiau, traditional Hawaiian habitation sites, cultural landscapes, and historic palaces.
This position is ideal for an archaeologist who enjoys fieldwork, working outdoors, exploring a variety of archaeological site types, and contributing to meaningful cultural preservation. The work requires the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues, community members, and other partners.
Excess work experience as described below, or any other responsible administrative, professional or analytical work experience which provided knowledge, skills and abilities comparable to those acquired in four (4) years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree in the majors specified above, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge, skills and abilities.
Archaeological Research Experience: One (1) year of professional archaeological research experience that involved conducting historical and archaeological research; conducting archaeological surveys, which included mapping and documenting survey sites; analyzing artifacts; evaluating archaeological sites to determine the significance of cultural resources; and preparing reports of research and findings.
Note: The State Recruiting Office will refer you to the Department of Land and Natural Resources regarding this position.
