Description
Support external audit and consulting engagements for local and state tax matters by gathering data, responding to requests, and assisting with timely resolution of findings. Research local, state, and federal tax laws; evaluate their impact on the Company; and monitor regulatory and filing requirement changes to support compliance and reduce tax liability. Prepare business personal property and ad valorem tax returns; manage the property tax life cycle; review assessments and invoices for accuracy; and submit valuation appeals when appropriate. Maintain an organized inventory of local, state, and federal property tax returns to support timely filing, tracking, and compliance. Develop, document, and update tax filing procedures to reflect current requirements and promote consistent processes. Identify and implement process improvements that streamline data collection, reporting, and filing for monthly, quarterly, and annual tax obligations. Manage state registrations for new Company locations, including applicable use tax, business license, and property tax requirements. Collaborate with internal departments and management to research tax issues and develop practical solutions for complex matters. Support the Director of Tax & Compliance by assisting with year-end income tax workpapers, business license renewals, and state annual report filings.
The ideal candidate must have a minimum of three years tax experience with a public accounting firm. A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance with an emphasis in Accounting is required, while a Master’s degree in Accounting with a concentration in Tax is preferred. Five years of relevant experience in indirect tax and compliance is highly desirable. Previous experience with multistate property tax, business licenses, state registrations, tax audits, or income tax workpapers is a plus. Previous experience in the transportation or motor carrier industry is also preferred. Candidates must either hold a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or be able to meet all requirements for CPA licensure; if a CPA license is not held, additional tax experience is required in lieu of certification.
