Description
The Laboratory Intern may focus on either Analytical Chemistry or Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) duties and responsibilities. Incumbents are also responsible for general care and upkeep of the laboratory, which requires cleaning and sterilization of laboratory glassware, preparation of reagents, and the maintenance of laboratory chemical & physical inventories.
For Analytical Lab Intern:
- Under supervision, perform routine to complex - physical, chemical, and microbiological analysis on water, wastewater, and related samples, with emphasis on:
- glassware washing,
- sample bottle prep,
- wet chemistry, and
- sample processing support.
- This position utilizes approved EPA and Standard Methods, which includes the use of liquid/liquid and/or solid phase extraction techniques.
- Use computer systems for instrument operation, generation of laboratory reports, and LIMS data entry support.
- Performs regular laboratory safety equipment checks
- Interacts effectively with others in the workplace.
- Follows all workplace and job safety rules and policies.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as required.
For QA/QC Lab Intern:
- Edit SOPs, flowcharts, checklists, and other QA/QC documents to align with evolving regulatory and technical standards
- Assist in calibrating, verifying, and monitoring laboratory support equipment such as, but not limited to temperature sensing devices and volumetric devices
- Use computer systems to help maintain an electronic quality management system and LIMS data entry support
- Generate and review reports related to laboratory equipment and data analysis
- Assist with preparing presentations and other training material related to laboratory QA/QC topics
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the Laboratory’s Quality Management System (QMS), including document and records control, proficiency testing, corrective actions, calibration and preventive maintenance programs, and ELAP/TNI compliance.
- Interacts effectively with others in the workplace.
- Follows all workplace and job safety rules and policies.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as required.
Must be a currently enrolled student in a bachelor’s or graduate degree program with a major emphasis in Chemistry, Biology, or related fields. College undergraduate laboratory experience is required. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating & maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; performs duties in a timely manner with minimal supervision; handles various chemical reagents used in special washing procedures; maintains a neat work area. Knowledge of safety practices and laboratory operational procedures is required.
#1 - Interns must be enrolled full-time in an accredited bachelor’s or graduate degree program related to this field.
#2 - Interns must have at least one year remaining in school.

Internships are to provide meaningful training and work experience for students pursuing academic studies related to the District’s mission and goals. Interns must submit proof of full-time enrollment, class schedules, and grades each semester/quarter. Interns are not eligible for employee benefits. Interns are at-will and can be terminated at the discretion of the Department Manager with or without cause and with or without prior notice. This is not a seasonal internship. Interns work year-round.

Schedule: Monday – Thursday between 6:00 AM – 5:30 PM and Friday between 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Up to 25 hours a week.
Hourly Rate: Undergraduate: $20 per hour & Graduate: $25 per hour
