The Role: Acquia is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our Web Governance Backend Engineering team. This is first and foremost a hands-on engineering role — you will spend the majority of your time designing, building, and shipping products and features our customers love and depend on. Enterprise reliability, observability, and scale are your standards. You'll also play a meaningful mentoring role, helping to lift the engineering capability of those around you.

We are an AI Native engineering organization. Our engineers work alongside AI as a true collaborator - designing, building, and shipping features. You’ll be expected to quickly ramp up on AI tools, delegate work to AI, review and verify AI-generated output with the same rigor as any code, and continuously adapt your workflow as capabilities evolve.

Key Responsibilities

• Write and ship production code daily — you are an active contributor.
• We mostly work on Ruby and Java but we also have projects in Python, Go, JavaScript, and even one in C++. You need to be eager to jump on and work with any language and framework.
• AI is at the core of everything we do. We are undergoing a deep transformation to become AI-native. Engineers won't write code but technical specs, and AI agents implement them.
• Mentor engineers as a natural extension of your work — sharing knowledge through code reviews, pairing sessions, and design discussions, not through management overhead.
• Own the entire product lifecycle: tech specs, implementation, testing, delivery. "Done" is when the customer is getting value out of what we've built.

Required Experience

• 8+ years of software engineering
• Strong engineering fundamentals (testing, CI/CD, architecture).
• Strong backend expertise: APIs, HTTP, Databases, MVC.
• M.Sc. in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

Desired Skills

• Hands-on experience diagnosing and resolving issues in distributed systems.
• Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, OpenCode or similar).
• Ability to write effective prompts with clear context, constraints, and success criteria.
• Judgment to choose between interactive collaboration and autonomous delegation based on task complexity and risk.
• Strong code review habits, including verification of AI-generated code for correctness and security.
• Willingness to iterate on AI workflows and contribute to team best practices.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written — able to present system design to both engineers and product managers. This is especially important in a remote-first organization with a global workforce.
• Senior IC track record — known for the quality of your own code and system designs, with mentoring that happens organically through great work, not through meetings.
