Description

The Opportunity

At APA, our purpose is to secure Australia’s energy future. We’re not doing it alone. We’re doing it with our customers and communities as Australia’s energy infrastructure partner, a role our unique experience and expertise positions us to play.

Reporting to our Manager Asset Intelligence, we have an opportunity for a Mathematical Optimisation Specialist to join our Asset Intelligence team.

This new role will use mathematical optimisation and modelling to support operational and investment decisions across our Power business. You’ll turn complex operational challenges, constraints and commercial objectives into practical models that provide decision intelligence into how we operate our assets.

Working across operational and commercial teams, you’ll take optimisation from business problem through to practical, production ready solutions.

The preferred location for this role is Brisbane, however we’re also open to candidates based in Sydney or Melbourne.

Key Responsibilities

·       Develop and own mathematical optimisation models that support operational and investment decision making, including dispatch optimisation, simulation and predictive modelling.

·       Translate operational problems, constraints and commercial objectives into practical mathematical models using Gurobi and related optimisation techniques.

·       Analyse asset performance, reliability trends and failure modes to identify opportunities to improve asset utilisation, efficiency and value.

·       Develop, test, validate and deploy production ready optimisation solutions using Python, including scenario modelling and sensitivity analysis.

·       Collaborate across engineering, operations and commercial teams to develop practical solutions and integrate optimisation models into operational decision making.

Your background

·       You will have demonstrated experience using Gurobi for mathematical optimisation (Constraints & objective function programming) as this is a must have requirement for the role.

·       You will have a PhD in Mathematics or a closely related quantitative discipline, with a strong foundation in mathematical modelling and optimisation. The preference will be a candidate with undergraduate electrical / mechanical engineering qualification.

·       You will have experience in mathematical optimisation and/or operations research, translating real world problems and constraints into practical mathematical models.

·       You will have strong Python capability and experience developing analytical or optimisation solutions for operational environments.

·       You will have strong communication and stakeholder skills, with the ability to explain complex mathematical concepts to business stakeholders and translate analytical outputs into business decisions and recommendations
