Description

Description

Job Summary: The Director of EHR serves as the primary owner of StrideCare's electronic health record platform (athenahealth) and is responsible for its stability, optimization, security, and scalability. This role oversees system administration, third-party integrations, and EHR training, and leads the EHR build, configuration, and migration for newly acquired clinics so each practice is onboarded efficiently, consistently, and with minimal disruption to patient care. The position is a hands-on leadership role in a fast-paced, high-growth physician management services organization (MSO).

Supervisory Responsibilities: Leads, develops, and manages a team of EHR analysts, application specialists, trainers, and support staff.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary owner and subject matter expert for athenahealth and related modules, including clinical, practice management, patient engagement, and revenue cycle workflows.
  • Maintain system performance, configuration, user access, security roles, and release management; evaluate and implement vendor upgrades and enhancements.
  • Manage the athenahealth vendor relationship, including escalations, support cases, contract renewals, and account management.
  • Develop and maintain governance for system changes, enhancement requests, and prioritization.
  • Lead EHR strategy and execution for acquired practices, including discovery, workflow assessment, build, configuration, data migration, testing, go-live, and post-go-live support.
  • Develop and refine a repeatable, scalable acquisition playbook and implementation methodology.
  • Design standardized templates, order sets, note structures, and workflows for vascular surgery and podiatry while accommodating practice-specific needs.
  • Manage legacy system transitions, including data conversion, archival, and decommissioning.
  • Oversee integrations between athenahealth and third-party systems (e.g., imaging/PACS, vascular lab equipment, labs, e-prescribing, patient portals, clearinghouses, BI tools, ERP/HR systems), including interface design, testing, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure data integrity, standardization, and accurate reporting across all clinics.
  • Build and maintain an EHR training curriculum covering new-hire onboarding, role-based training, go-live support, and ongoing optimization; monitor user adoption and proficiency.
  • Partner with clinical leaders to improve provider satisfaction and reduce documentation burden.
  • Ensure the EHR environment complies with HIPAA, CMS, ONC, MIPS/MACRA, and other applicable regulations; partner with Compliance and IT Security on access controls, audit readiness, risk assessments, and incident response.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with Operations, Revenue Cycle, Finance, IT, Compliance, and Clinical leadership.
  • Develop the EHR roadmap in alignment with company growth, M&A strategy, and clinical and operational goals; manage the EHR budget, vendor spend, and resourcing.
  • Provide regular reporting on system performance, project status, risks, and KPIs to executive leadership and the sponsor group.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Skills / Abilities:

  • Hands-on experience administering, configuring, and optimizing an ambulatory EHR/practice management system.
  • Experience managing system integrations and interfaces (HL7, APIs, FHIR, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of clinic workflows, revenue cycle processes, and the relationship between clinical documentation and billing.
  • Proven ability to manage vendors, projects, budgets, and cross-functional teams, including multiple go-lives and competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build trust with physicians and staff, drive adoption, and lead change with empathy and clarity.
  • Ability to create scalable, repeatable processes and use data and metrics to guide improvement.
  • Direct experience with athenahealth (athenaOne, athenaClinicals, athenaCollector, athenaCommunicator) preferred.
  • Familiarity with value-based care, quality reporting, and MIPS preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • Experience in a physician practice management or MSO environment, ideally multi-site, multi-specialty, or acquisition-driven.
  • Experience leading EHR implementations, migrations, or conversions.
  • Experience supporting specialty practices, particularly vascular surgery, interventional radiology, or podiatry, preferred.
  • Experience in a private equity-backed or high-growth healthcare environment preferred.
  • Project management certification (PMP, Prince2, Agile) or EHR vendor certifications preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
  • Manual dexterity required for operating office equipment.
