Job Description Summary

Join GE Vernova’s HVDC Centre of Excellence and become part of a highly motivated, international engineering team developing the next generation of HVDC converter and HVDC Grid technologies.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of power electronics and contribute to innovative technologies that are enabling the global energy transition.

As a Senior Electronic Hardware Engineer, you will take a leading technical role in the design, development, verification and validation of electronic hardware for advanced industrial control systems used in HVDC applications.

Working with a high degree of autonomy, you will apply your extensive electronics engineering experience and technical judgement to solve complex engineering challenges, influence technical direction and drive best practice across the discipline.

You will also play an important role in developing engineering capability, mentoring colleagues and contributing to the continued evolution of GE Vernova's electronic hardware technology and engineering standards.

Based at our HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford, the position will involve international collaboration with GE Vernova engineering teams, strategic suppliers, manufacturing partners, test laboratories and customers. International travel will be required.

Job Description

What You Will Do;

Electronic Hardware Design & Engineering

  • Lead the design and development of digital and analogue electronic circuits for advanced industrial control systems.
  • Provide technical oversight of schematic capture, PCB design and layout, including design rules, constraints and interactions with power electronics systems.
  • Lead electronic component selection, evaluation, qualification and lifecycle management.
  • Ensure electronic designs meet EMC, environmental, EHS, RoHS/REACH and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Apply design for EMC principles, particularly within challenging power electronics environments.
  • Develop and maintain technical specifications, engineering documentation and design standards.

Verification, Validation & Problem Solving

  • Lead and support hardware verification and validation activities, including practical bench testing, integration testing and product qualification.
  • Support and lead type testing activities, including EMC, environmental and HALT testing.
  • Work with suppliers and external test laboratories to ensure products meet their technical and performance requirements.
  • Lead technical investigations, failure analysis and root cause analysis, applying structured problem-solving methodologies such as 8D.
  • Lead Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) activities to identify and mitigate design risks.
  • Analyse test results and engineering data to develop recommendations and drive continuous product improvement.

Technical Leadership & Engineering Authority

  • Act as a technical authority within electronic hardware engineering, providing technical direction and guidance across projects and engineering activities.
  • Lead technical decision-making on complex engineering challenges, evaluating alternative solutions and managing technical risks.
  • Influence engineering standards, technical policies, design practices and the development of future technology.
  • Provide technical mentoring and coaching to less experienced engineers, sharing knowledge and developing engineering capability within the team.
  • Work collaboratively across multidisciplinary engineering teams, influencing internal and external stakeholders to achieve optimal technical solutions.
  • Contribute to innovation activities, technical publications, patent applications and the protection of GE Vernova's intellectual property.
  • Represent the business externally through technical collaboration, industry conferences and professional organisations such as IEC and CIGRE.

Industrialisation & Product Lifecycle Management

  • Drive design for manufacture (DFM), design for test (DFT), industrialisation and design-to-cost activities.
  • Work closely with electronics manufacturers, suppliers and integrators to ensure designs are successfully transitioned into production.
  • Support supply chain integration, component qualification and manufacturing readiness.
  • Manage product lifecycle challenges, including component obsolescence, availability and extended lead times.
  • Support the maintenance, modification and improvement of legacy electronic products to extend their operational lifespan.
  • Promote continuous improvement in product quality, reliability, manufacturability and engineering efficiency.

What You Will Bring

We are looking for an experienced electronics engineer with extensive hardware engineering knowledge, strong technical judgement and the ability to provide technical leadership within a complex, multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience in digital and analogue electronic hardware design and development.
  • Strong understanding of electronic components, circuit principles and electronic design methodologies.
  • Experience with PCB design, including schematic capture, layout constraints, design rules and interactions with power electronics systems.
  • Experience in electronic hardware verification, validation, practical bench testing and product qualification.
  • Strong knowledge of EMC design principles and experience supporting EMC testing.
  • Experience in electronic component selection, evaluation, qualification and lifecycle management.
  • Demonstrable experience in failure analysis, root cause analysis and structured problem solving.
  • Knowledge and experience of DFMEA and engineering risk management.
  • Experience in design for manufacture, design for test and product industrialisation.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements, produce high-quality engineering documentation and develop robust technical solutions.
  • Ability to work autonomously, exercise sound engineering judgement and lead the resolution of complex technical challenges.

Highly Desirable Experience

  • Experience within HVDC, power electronics or other demanding industrial control applications.
  • Experience with FPGA component selection and associated hardware design considerations.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication networks, such as Profibus, Ethernet and Passive Optical Networks (PON).
  • Experience of firmware or software development.
  • Familiarity with electronic modelling and simulation tools such as LTSpice, SIMetrix, MATLAB or Mathcad.
  • Experience of environmental, EMC and HALT testing.
  • Experience in managing legacy products, component obsolescence and supply chain challenges.
  • Experience working with external manufacturers, suppliers and electronics integrators.

What Will Make You Successful

  • A proactive and innovative approach to engineering, with the ability to challenge conventional thinking and develop new solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to make sound technical decisions in complex situations.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary international engineering team.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions and build consensus.
  • A willingness to share knowledge, mentor colleagues and contribute to the development of engineering capability.
  • A commitment to continuous professional development and keeping up to date with emerging technologies and industry developments.
  • The ability to work to challenging deadlines whilst maintaining high standards of quality and technical accuracy.

Chartered Engineer status, or a willingness and capability to work towards professional accreditation, is desirable.
