Description

At South Bow, we do one thing, and we do it well: safely moving oil between some of the world’s most critical markets. We’re building our high-performing team with versatile thinkers who thrive on solving big challenges together. If you’re ready for a position where your skills are highly valued and your work is incredibly important, we want to meet you. Bring your talents to a new streamlined energy company, dedicated to operational, commercial and safety excellence as we pursue our critical purpose of delivering the energy people need.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Hydraulics and Capacity Engineer to provide technical leadership and strategic oversight of operational capacity management for South Bow's crude oil pipeline systems. This role serves as a key subject matter expert responsible for optimizing pipeline capacity, balancing operational risk and cost, and influencing decisions across Commercial, Asset Management, Field Operations, Control Centre, Work Management, Engineering, and SCADA teams.

The successful candidate will lead complex hydraulic evaluations, drive capacity optimization strategies, support long-term forecasting, and provide expert guidance to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective pipeline operations.

What You'll Do

Capacity Management & Optimization

  • Lead the management and optimization of pipeline capacity and variable operating costs across South Bow's liquids systems.
  • Partner with Commercial Operations and Asset Management to establish and adjust throughput targets to meet contractual and business commitments.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to maximize system utilization while balancing operational constraints, reliability, risk, and cost considerations.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to leadership on capacity-related risks, opportunities, and operational decisions.

Hydraulic Engineering Leadership

  • Lead complex steady-state hydraulic analyses and provide technical direction on pipeline operating strategies.
  • Optimize Drag Reducing Agent (DRA) usage and operating parameters to maximize throughput and minimize operating costs.
  • Evaluate hydraulic constraints, bottlenecks, and system performance, developing recommendations for optimization and debottlenecking opportunities.
  • Lead technical assessments for planned maintenance activities and unplanned outages, quantifying capacity impacts and mitigation options.
  • Provide expert guidance on system pressure, temperature, and stress management considerations.
  • Develop and continuously improve hydraulic modeling methodologies, tools, and processes.
  • Mentor and support engineers, technologists, and operational stakeholders in hydraulic analysis and capacity management practices.

Outage Planning & Operational Excellence

  • Serve as a key technical lead during major outage planning and execution activities.
  • Provide strategic oversight and recommendations to optimize outage scopes, schedules, and capacity impacts.
  • Collaborate with Work Management, Control Centre, Scheduling, and Field Operations to coordinate system restrictions and recovery plans.
  • Review and approve operational plans, notifications, and mitigation strategies related to system outages and operational constraints.
  • Lead risk assessments and support critical operational decision-making during abnormal operating conditions.

Capacity Forecasting & Business Planning

  • Lead development of monthly available capacity forecasts supporting commercial nomination cycles.
  • Provide technical expertise for annual budgeting, toll development, and long-range capacity planning activities.
  • Support development of 1- to 5-year system capacity forecasts and strategic growth scenarios.
  • Analyze system performance trends and develop recommendations to improve asset utilization and operational efficiency.
  • Prepare and present capacity outlooks, performance metrics, and strategic recommendations to leadership and business stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in pipeline operations, hydraulics, engineering, or capacity management within the energy industry.
  • Engineering degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Process, Petroleum, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex technical analysis and influencing operational and business decisions.
  • Strong understanding of pipeline hydraulics, capacity planning, and operational optimization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA or eligibility for registration.
  • Advanced knowledge of fluid dynamics, hydraulic modeling, and pipeline operations.
  • Experience with pipeline simulation software and hydraulic modeling tools.
  • Experience utilizing Power BI, Python, or other analytics tools to support operational decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders at multiple organizational levels.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills with the ability to manage ambiguity and competing priorities.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts into business recommendations.
  • Proven commitment to continuous improvement, operational excellence, and safety leadership.
