Description
Mechatronics Engineer (Advanced Pneumatics)
Intelligent Masks Team | ResMed
Join Our Intelligent Masks Team
At ResMed, our products become part of people's everyday lives. Within our Masks business, we create products that people wear every night, where comfort, fit, performance, usability and appearance all matter.
As part of our Intelligent Masks team, you'll help explore and develop next-generation sleep technologies that combine sensing, electronics, embedded intelligence and advanced pneumatic systems. We are a hands-on research and technology group focused on transforming innovative ideas into products that improve the lives of millions of people living with sleep and respiratory conditions.
We're looking for a Mechatronics Engineer who enjoys solving complex product challenges and turning concepts into functional systems that can be tested, evaluated and ultimately scaled into manufacturable solutions.
This role spans the full product development lifecycle, from understanding user needs and exploring concepts through prototyping, system integration, testing and early-stage verification. You'll work at the intersection of engineering, human factors, sensing technologies, product design and innovation, contributing to technologies that may shape future consumer and medical products.
Let's Talk About the Role
You'll be part of the Intelligent Masks team, a multidisciplinary group focused on exploring next-generation sleep products and advanced respiratory technologies.
This role is ideally suited to a Mechatronics Engineer who enjoys working across sensors, embedded electronics, firmware, control systems, signal processing and electromechanical design. You will have a particular focus on Advanced Pneumatics, supporting the development of technologies involving airflow control, sensing, closed-loop systems and intelligent electromechanical products.
Let's Talk About Responsibilities
- Drive the development of exploratory sleep-related products, embedded systems and technology concepts from early ideas through to functional prototypes.
- Design, prototype and integrate electromechanical subsystems incorporating physiological sensing, embedded electronics, firmware, signal processing and wireless connectivity.
- Develop and evaluate closed-loop control systems for next-generation sleep technologies.
- Support the development of pneumatic and airflow-management technologies, including valves, pumps, blowers and pressure-control systems.
- Plan and conduct bench testing, experimentation and early-stage verification activities to guide technical direction.
- Analyse experimental results and translate findings into product and technology improvements.
- Contribute to simulation, modelling and system-level investigations supporting product innovation.
- Debug hardware, sensing, firmware and system integration challenges.
- Work closely with Industrial Design, Systems Engineering, Electronics, Firmware, Software, Algorithms, Clinical, Manufacturing, Quality and Regulatory teams.
- Participate in multidisciplinary product development activities from concept exploration through prototype evaluation.
- Ensure work is completed within the ResMed Quality Management System, with documentation appropriate to concept maturity and technical risk.
Let's Talk About Qualifications & Experience
Required
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- 2+ years of relevant engineering experience developing mechatronic, electromechanical or embedded products.
- Experience developing prototypes and integrating hardware, firmware and sensing technologies into working systems.
- Hands-on experience with microcontrollers, sensors, embedded firmware, signal acquisition and debugging tools.
- Understanding of control systems engineering, feedback systems, closed-loop control or signal processing.
- Experience planning and conducting product testing, experimentation or verification activities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound technical decisions using incomplete information.
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous, fast-moving environments while maintaining sound engineering judgement.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred
- Experience developing wearable, consumer electronics, medical device or sensing-enabled products.
- Experience with closed-loop control systems and embedded control algorithms.
- Exposure to pneumatic systems, airflow management, valves, pumps, blowers or pressure-control technologies.
- Experience with modelling, simulation or control-system analysis.
- Exposure to computational fluid dynamics (CFD), fluid mechanics or airflow simulation.
- Interest or experience in acoustics, fluid dynamics or electro-mechanical systems.
- Experience working within innovation, research, start-up or rapid prototyping environments.
- Familiarity with regulated product development environments and quality systems.
Let's Talk About You
You are naturally curious, enjoy building and testing new ideas, and thrive in environments where experimentation and learning are encouraged. You enjoy understanding how mechanical, electrical and software systems interact, and you're motivated by solving real-world product problems.
You bring a practical, hands-on approach to engineering, embrace collaboration and are excited by the opportunity to contribute to technologies that improve health outcomes and enhance people's quality of life.
