Job Description:
The Sr. Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) Manager provides strategic leadership and oversight of VDC practices across business unit(s) and/or at the enterprise level. This role is responsible for establishing vision, standards, and accountability for VDC execution, ensuring that VDC is an integrated and value-driven component of project strategy from preconstruction through closeout.The Sr. VDC Manager leads and develops VDC managers, coordinators, and technicians while driving consistency, operational excellence, and innovation in VDC processes and technologies. This role partners closely with operations, preconstruction, and technology leadership to align VDC strategy with company goals and project delivery needs.
The Sr. VDC Manager must demonstrate advanced knowledge across multiple disciplines (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, architectural, structural, and civil). The Sr. VDC Manager must possess strong strategic thinking, leadership capability, and communication skills, and must be able to influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
Strategic Leadership
Develop and maintain a clear VDC vision aligned with Fortis’s strategic objectives.
Establish and maintain consistent VDC standards, workflows, and best practices across assigned projects or business units.
Identify opportunities to expand VDC impact beyond contractual requirements to improve safety, quality, cost, schedule, and employee experience.
Partner with Operations Technology, Data, and IT Teams to ensure VDC practices align with broader technology and data strategy.
Evaluate emerging tools and workflows and guide responsible adoption in alignment with company strategy.
Participate in long-term planning related to VDC staffing, capabilities, and organizational development.
Operational Oversight
Provide oversight and support to VDC managers and project-level VDC teams.
Ensure project-level VDC implementation aligns with Fortis standards and delivers measurable value.
Support preconstruction efforts by ensuring appropriate VDC scope, budgeting, and strategy are defined early.
Monitor VDC performance across projects and implement corrective actions when necessary.
Facilitate cross-project knowledge sharing and lessons learned to improve consistency and execution.
People Leadership and Development
Directly manage VDC managers and/or other VDC staff as assigned.
Recruit, develop, mentor, and retain high-performing VDC professionals.
Identify responsibilities for each VDC team member and ensure clarity of expectations.
Evaluate team members’ progress and performance and hold individuals accountable.
Build leadership capability within the VDC team and develop succession plans.
Promote a collaborative, team-oriented culture where VDC is viewed as a strategic partner to project teams.
Contribute to Fortis-wide knowledge sharing, training, and professional development initiatives.
Business and Financial Stewardship
Participate in resource planning and allocation to ensure appropriate staffing across projects or business units.
Support development and oversight of VDC budgets.
Align VDC investments with measurable business value.
Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reduce waste through VDC practices.
Other
Assist in other duties as assigned, relevant to the achievement of the position’s and team’s objectives.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum 7 years of progressive VDC or construction technology experience.
Bachelors’ degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management, or related degree program, or equivalent work experience.
Advanced knowledge of VDC workflows.
Extensive knowledge of VDC platforms and technology.
Demonstrated experience leading VDC strategy on complex construction projects.
Experience leading and developing teams.
Strong communication and executive presentation skills.
Experience working across multiple project delivery methods (Design-Bid-Build, Design/Build, CM/GC, etc).
Ability to think strategically while maintaining operational awareness.
Must possess a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record in accordance with Fortis policy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Industry BIM Certification (Revit Professional, CM-BIM, or related).
Experience with Mission Critical facilities highly desired.
Experience with budgeting and resource forecasting.
Experience with emerging technologies such as 4D scheduling, XR, digital twins, automation, and data integration.
Demonstrated experience contributing to enterprise-level technology or process strategy.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in a professional office environment. Role is stationary, often standing or sitting for long periods of time, utilizing standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc. Communication with internal and external contacts, including speaking and hearing is required. May occasionally push, pull or lift up to 25 lbs.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Travel to remote jobsites and/or other Fortis regional offices will be necessary on a frequent, but inconsistent basis. Assume 1-2 trips per month as an annual average or equating to approximately 50% of a typical month traveling to regional offices and/or remote project sites.
All Fortis positions require some level of driving.
