About your role

We are looking for a Supervisor Shaft to join our Underground Operation Team delivering the world-class mine in Mongolia. The function of this role relates to administering the systematic and coordinated activities and practices through which an organisation optimally and sustainably manages its assets and asset systems, their associated performance, risks and expenditures over their life cycles for the purpose of achieving its organisational strategic plan. In particular, it focuses on defining, assessing, and scoping and developing tactical asset management plans that consider the full business value chain and deliver required business results within this function.

The purpose of this role is to provide frontline leadership and ensures effective and consistent delivery of services on operational activities of the functional area in line with the company policies and procedures to achieve the team's objectives and targeted plan. Also provide technical expertise in hoisting and shafts, as well as logistical systems and material handling best practices.

What the role entails

• Overseeing the day to day operation of the Shaft Operations Team, whose primary purpose, is the safe operation of shaft and hoisting infrastructure, maintenance of shaft infrastructure, and delivery of materials to the underground shaft stations in accordance with the integrated plan.
• Implementing systems and practices to allow optimum, predictable, and transparent shaft scheduling.
• Acting as superintendent when the Superintendent Shaft Operations is offsite.
• Along with their cross shift, leading a diverse team of over 50 expat and national employees.
• Ensuring the safety and compliance to Rio Tinto and industry standard practices in your area of accountability.
• Reviewing SWPs and JHAs.
• Overseeing rigging operation.
• Initiating and leading continuous improvement projects and ensuring performance of shaft and hoisting infrastructure.
• Assisting the operational readiness group in developing policies and procedures to ensure the safe operation of shaft equipment and infrastructure.
• Cooperation with mining, construction, electrical underground leaders.
• Providing strong and effective leadership to team members.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have the following:

• Degree in engineering or relevant discipline.
• A minimum of 5 years underground mining leadership experience.
• Demonstrated experience in the management and/or operation of shaft infrastructure.
• Demonstrated experience in the management and/or operation of underground material handling equipment.
• Mines rescue or underground emergency management experience.
• Strong commitment to safety.
• Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment.
• Advanced English language verbal and written skills.
• Advanced computer skills including proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.                                
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously within a variety of disciplines.

Where you’ll be working

Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
