Ready to make an impact? We're looking for an onsite intern to join our team for the 10-week Summer Internship program (May 17 - July 23, 2027) at our headquarters in Wilmington, NC. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, September 28th.

How This Role Impacts Live Oak and Its People

Every loan application that reaches Live Oak carries a business owner's tax returns and years of financial history. Information Security is the reason that material stays where it belongs. The team watches for threats across the bank, reviews how new systems get built, digs into the security of the vendors we rely on, and gets to other teams while a weak spot is still cheap to fix.

We work AI-first. Analysts here run agents to triage alerts and to pull answers out of log files no person could read by hand. A human still makes the call on what matters and who needs to hear about it.

An intern sits inside that work. Your summer project goes onto the team's real roadmap, and you will present what you found to the people who own it. By the end of the summer you will know how a bank defends itself day to day. Ask a lot of questions while you are here, because that is part of what we want out of the role.

What You'll Do at Live Oak

• Support day-to-day monitoring of security alerts and help document what you find

• Assist with vulnerability scanning and track remediation progress alongside your teammates

• Help review access permissions across bank systems to confirm people have only what their job requires

• Contribute to security awareness materials that help employees across the bank spot phishing and social engineering attempts

• Use AI agents and assistants in your daily work to move faster on research and writing, then tell us where they earned their keep

• Take on a summer project scoped with your manager, then present your findings to the Information Security team

• Sit in on incident response exercises, risk reviews, and vendor security assessments so you can see how decisions get made

• Tell the team what you notice about how we work, even on your first week

Required Experience

• Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in cybersecurity, information systems, computer science, or a related field

• Coursework, certifications, personal projects, or club involvement that shows a working interest in security concepts such as networking, operating systems, or access control

• Hands-on experience using AI assistants or agents for schoolwork, projects, or a previous job, and a sense of when to trust the output and when to verify it

• Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain a technical idea to someone outside of technology

• Careful attention to detail and comfort with handling confidential information responsibly

• Willingness to learn in a fast-moving environment and to speak up when something looks

Preferred Experience

• Familiarity with security tools used for scanning, log analysis, or endpoint monitoring

• Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud

• Experience building or customizing something with AI, such as an agent workflow, a chatbot, a coding assistant, or a script that calls a model API

• Interest in the security side of AI itself, including prompt injection, data leakage, and how to evaluate an AI tool before a company adopts it

• Some scripting experience in Python, PowerShell, or a similar language

• Participation in capture-the-flag competitions, hackathons, home labs, or a campus security organization

• Any prior internship, part-time role, or volunteer work in technology, financial services, or a regulated industry

The base pay range for this position is $19.77 - $32.12 per hour. Compensation may also include annual bonuses and long-term incentives, subject to various metrics and company policy. A candidate’s salary is determined by several factors including travel, relevant work experience or skills and expertise.
