Job Summary and Responsibilities
As our Nursing Student Extern, you will perform delegated duties and provide supportive care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, consistent with your defined role and our policies.
Every day you will execute basic patient care tasks (vital signs, blood glucose, I&Os), assist patients with personal care and ADLs, report abnormal findings or changes to the RN, and support unit stocking, cleanliness, and orderliness.
To be successful in this role, you will be a nursing student enrolled in an accredited program, demonstrating personal accountability for our mission and core values. Your eagerness to learn, attention to detail, and ability to collaboratively support patient care in a clinical setting are essential.
- Assists with safe and appropriate delegated patient care tasks which are directly supervised by the nurse.
- Provides quality patient care, including comfort and hygiene measures, preventative skin care, safety measures, transport, and nutritional and elimination needs.
- Promptly answers call lights and responds to patient needs.
- Reports patient status changes and needs to Registered Nurse accurately and in a timely manner.
- Accurately documents vital signs, input/output, nutritional intake, personal hygiene, weights, and other patient care performed and reports findings promptly to Registered Nurse.
- Demonstrates effective use of clinical strategies to ensure patient and associate safety.
Job Requirements
Required
- High School Diploma/G.E.D.
- Successful completion of clinical nursing courses to have obtained competency in performing basic health care tasks (nursing fundamentals and med/surg clinical rotation or equivalent).
- Must be actively enrolled in a nursing program. Proof of active enrollment required each term. Any change in status must be communicated immediately.
- Completion of nursing fundamentals and first clinical rotations or equivalent.
