Job Description:

JOB DUTIES: Administer, coordinate and implement the management of 17 State Wildlife Management Areas within the assigned area. Coordinate and administer area related contractual services, agricultural leases, federal farm program requirements, project requisitions and similar land management documentation. Coordinate with other Management Section staff to maintain functional office and shop space on Oak Valley WMA. Collaborate with NGPC divisions, NRD’s, and federal agencies in the management of WMA’s. Ensure compliance with federal aid guidelines. Perform Land reconnaissance on potential acquisition sites. Assist in the implementation of all technical services related to wildlife surveys and inventories, disease control, animal damage control and wildlife propagation projects. Assist with research projects involving district wildlife species. Assist in the development of field recommendations regarding seasons, bag limits and general regulations based on interpretation of population surveys, field impressions and knowledge of life history information. Supervise permanent and seasonal employees. Assist in the implementation of the regulatory functions of the Division related to controlled shooting areas, game farms, scientific collection and other similar programs, as well as general WMA regulations. Prepare budget requests and monitor expenditures for assigned areas. Establish and maintain professional relations with a broad array of outdoor recreationist and nature advocacy groups within the District. Ensure control of noxious weeds and maintain boundary fences to comply with state laws. Perform related work as required.

 

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in fish or wildlife management or closely related field or equivalent experience in the field of biological science AND three years’ experience in fish or wildlife management or a closely related field; OR Master's degree in fish or wildlife management or closely related field or equivalent experience in the field of biological science AND one year experience in fish and wildlife management or a closely related field.

Other: Driver's license required.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of wildlife habitat management principles; wildlife species; life history and habitat needs; research, statistics, budgeting processes and record keeping systems; and conservation statutes and regulations as they relate to wildlife as well as a working knowledge of current management philosophies, such as the conservation of biological diversity; landscape ecology and adaptive management.  Ability to communicate effectively; set goals and objectives; perform heavy physical labor and work outdoors for long periods of time; operate and maintain hand and power tools including chain saws, tractors and trucks; work with little supervision; supervise and direct the work of others and develop and maintain professional relations with a broad range of agencies and publics.
