When considering candidates, we look for scientific and business professionals who are highly motivated, collaborative, and most importantly, share our passionate interest in fighting cancer.

General Description:

At BeOne Institute, we extend BeOne’s execution strength with a dedicated innovation engine, bringing agility and scientific depth to transform uncertainty into actionable and high-impact therapeutic opportunities. We operate according to three core principles:

  • Bold Exploration: we pursue novel and high-potential ideas through rapid, iterative innovation cycles.
  • Strategic Alignment: we prioritize disease areas that align closely with BeOne’s R&D priorities and long-term vision.
  • Pipeline Impact: we translate insights into tangible assets and advance emerging platforms into impactful programs.

As a Scientist at BeOne Institute, you will play a key role in conceptualizing, enabling, and driving cutting-edge research at our San Carlos, CA site. In this role, you will develop and execute biochemical and cellular assays to enable discovery across novel targets, mechanisms, modalities, and chemical matter addressing unmet needs in oncology and immunology. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in assay development and screening, combined with the versatility and scientific curiosity to contribute across disciplines as research priorities evolve. You will be expected to bring creative solutions to current and emerging challenges, contribute to brainstorming and scientific strategy, and collaborate broadly to propel our research forward. This is a rare opportunity to pursue bold ideas and translate them into real medicines.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Lead or co-lead exploratory research efforts focused on novel targets and innovative approaches to high-impact biological questions.
  • Design, develop, optimize, execute, and interpret phenotypic and targeted assays, including biochemical and cellular assays.
  • Develop robust, quantitative, and scalable assay workflows, including assay miniaturization and automation where appropriate.
  • Stay current on state-of-the-art screening technologies, assay methodologies, and project-relevant scientific literature; be adaptable and independently follow the science as research priorities evolve.
  • Proactively identify experimental challenges, develop creative solutions, and drive improvements in assay performance, throughput, and reproducibility.
  • Communicate scientific progress through regular updates and presentations, clearly articulating experimental rationale, results, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary and cross-functional teams and contribute to scientific innovation within and beyond the Institute.
  • Contribute to research planning, laboratory operations, and other activities that support the strategic objectives of the BeOne Institute at the San Carlos site.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely ELN records and uphold high standards of data quality and integrity.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May be a contact for external CRO partners when needed
  • May provide matrix or line-function leadership for project teams when needed

Computer Skills:

  • Candidates are expected to maintain an electronic notebook to a high level of data quality
  • Familiarity with visual data science tools (eg: Spotfire) is a plus

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in biology, chemistry, engineering, or other related field with 3+ years of experience
  • Demonstrated experience in assay development, optimization, miniaturization, and execution.
  • Strong quantitative skills and demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret, and draw meaningful conclusions from experimental data.
  • Broad expertise in experimental biology, with the ability to contribute across cell biology, protein science, and/or related disciplines as scientific priorities evolve.
  • Ability to independently design experimental strategies, troubleshoot complex technical challenges, and drive projects toward defined scientific objectives.
  • Experience with common lab automation platforms and equipment (eg: acoustic dispensers, liquid handlers, plate readers, and related instrumentation).
  • Ability to operate effectively in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, and interdisciplinary research environment, and to integrate multi-disciplinary approaches to solve complex biological problems
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Be able to work on-site in San Carlos, CA

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of cancer biology, signaling pathways, and mechanisms of disease.
  • Experience studying transcription factors and/or transcriptional regulation.
  • Experience in a drug discovery or biotechnology research setting.
  • Experience with high-throughput or high-content screening.
  • Experience developing assays for challenging biological targets, including transcription factors, protein–protein interactions, or other historically difficult-to-assay targets.
