The Director of Occupational Medicine provides strategic, operational, and business leadership for Albany Medical Center's Occupational Medicine service line. Reporting to the Department Chair of Emergency Medicine and working in collaboration with the Occupational Medicine clinical dyad partner, the Director is responsible for the service line's operational performance, financial stewardship, employer engagement, program development, and long-term growth. The Director develops and executes strategic initiatives to expand occupational health services, strengthen employer partnerships, enhance the organization's market presence across diverse employer sectors, and identify opportunities for program innovation and service expansion. This role provides leadership for the administrative operations of the service line, ensuring efficient, compliant, and high-quality service delivery while fostering strong employer relationships and driving continuous operational improvement and program growth.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the service line's financial performance against budget, identifying operational efficiencies and growth opportunities
  • Develop and maintain annual strategic growth plans, including market analysis, service expansion opportunities, and competitive positioning within the regional occupational health market
  • Coordinate with the clinical dyad partner and other clinical leadership on operational matters (scheduling, staffing needs, capacity planning, program standards, and client service needs)
  • Serve as the primary operational liaison for employer escalations, contract concerns, and service recovery efforts
  • Identify, evaluate, and execute growth opportunities across all B2B employer sectors served by the program (e.g., transportation/logistics, public safety, police, fire, EMS, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and other employer segments)
  • Develop and manage employer client relationships across all sectors, including contract negotiation and management, pricing, account management, and oversight of services provided.
  • Identify and enhance partnerships with community organizations
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Practice COO, and Physician Liaison on branding, promotional material, employer outreach, referral development, and coordinated business development strategies
  • Oversee Occupational Medicine operations supporting service delivery: scheduling efficiency, employer portal/referral process performance, client reporting, and billing/invoicing accuracy
  • Support recruitment and onboarding logistics for new staff in partnership with clinical leadership and HR
  • Monitors and assures compliance with departmental policies and procedures as well as outside regulatory requirements
  • Represent Albany Medical Center at business development events, employer/industry meetings, and public-safety agency outreach
  • Directly oversee administrative staff and perform all duties inherent to managerial role
  • Participate in hiring, training, and onboarding of assigned staff according to organizational policies and procedures
  • Provide performance management and day-to-day direction of administrative staff within the service line


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Medicine or related field - required
  • 10+ years of Department of Transportation Drug & Alcohol compliance, collection procedures, and instructor experience - required
  • 10+ years of accredited lab based knowledge & experience with urine, saliva, breath, hair, and fingernail drug / alcohol testing methodology - required
  • 10+ years of collaborating with the Federal & State Department of Transportation - required
  • 4-6 years of experience developing strategic growth plans, market expansion initiatives, and service line performance improvement programs within occupational health, urgent care, or employer-based healthcare services - required
  • 4-6 years in servicing occupational medicine clients for various services - required
  • 4-6 years in managing administrative staff and operations within a healthcare or clinical services setting - required
  • Strong track record in employer/B2B client relationship management and contract negotiation
  • Ability to analyze financial, operational, and productivity metrics including visit volume, revenue, employer retention, and service line profitability
  • Proficiency with occupational health service lines (DOT physicals, drug testing programs, fit-for-duty exams, public safety clearance exams) and applicable regulatory frameworks (FMCSA, OSHA)
  • Knowledge of the New York State workers' compensation system and pertinent NYS Department of Health (DOH) regulations
  • Experience with employer portal/referral technology platforms
  • Proficiency with Occupational Medicine billing practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort operating in a dyad leadership model alongside clinical leadership
  • Strong analytical skills with experience developing dashboards, KPIs, and performance scorecards to support operational decision-making
  • Clear understanding of the Department of Transportation Regulations, specifically FMCSA CFR 49 CFR Part 391
  • Knowledge regarding Department of Transportation modalities for federally regulated drug & alcohol testing - FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), FTA (Federal Transit Administration), FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), FRA (Federal Railroad Administration), PHMSA (Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration
  • Required to have knowledge & understanding of the Department of Transportation Regulation 49 CFR Part 40
  • Required knowledge and understanding of the Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy and Compliance
  • Understanding of specific drugs and time of detection, as it relates to each methodology.
  • Proven skills in de-escalation and conflict resolution
  • DOT Certification (49CFR Part 40) Upon Hire - required
  • DOT, Drug & Alcohol Screen, Finger Nail & Hair Testing Upon Hire - required
  • Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Instructor Upon Hire - preferred
