The North Carolina Department of Revenue is currently recruiting for a Revenue Officer II for the Interstate Collection Unit. The primary purpose of this position is to:

• Collect or resolve all out-of-state accounts receivable by conducting investigative research, interpreting and enforcing North Carolina tax laws, and actively collecting liabilities due to the state

• Actively enforce the NC Revenue laws as they apply to all out-of-state entities to attain the highest degree of compliance with these laws while ensuring public trust and confidence

• Engage in all activities involving the collection and resolution of delinquent taxes including, requesting special assessments, working with taxpayers to meet criteria for an installment agreement, submitting Offers in Compromise, and performing financial adjustments, as well as submitting cases for action by the Large Case Unit

The Revenue Officer II - Interstate will have comprehensive knowledge of all tax schedules and revenue laws to determine tax liabilities, secure delinquent tax returns, conduct tax investigations and resolve cases. Cases assigned to the Revenue Officer II - Interstate are considered the most complex in the TPAC Division’s inventory. The position will ensure impeccable communication and decision-making skills as erroneous actions by the members of the unit could result in undue hardship on taxpayers and could result in legal action being initiated against the department.

The Revenue Officer II - Interstate will have a high degree of tax law knowledge and be able to work independently due to the virtual nature of the unit. This position is held to a high standard of accountability. The Revenue Officer II - Interstate will be able to maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate taxpayers and N.C. out-of-state auditors in different time zones and have exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Thorough knowledge of State and Federal tax laws as they apply to out-of-state accounts receivable

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the department’s assessment and collection process and procedures, including the ability to determine or adjust a taxpayer’s liability

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Department’s Integrated Tax Administration System including the ability to adjust taxpayer accounts as deemed appropriate

  • Thorough knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code, administrative interpretations, accounting principles and all tax types and schedules and their application and administration

Recruitment Range: $50,088 - $87,654

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Business/Public Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in accounting or collection work involving public contact; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
