About the Position

The Infection Control Manager manages and administers the hospital's Infection Control Program in conjunction with the Infection Prevention Council. The department oversees all policies and procedures related to infection control. In accordance with the hospital's mission and the goals of the Infection Prevention Council, the Infection Control Manager designs system-wide surveillance of infectious processes to prevent acquisition or transmission of illness. The Infection Control Manager is responsible to lead the organization in the recognition and reduction of transmitted diseases to realize excellence (90th percentile performance) in infection rates across the healthcare system. The manager must be able to work collaboratively with a wide range of people including Medical Staff, other clinical staff, departments of the healthcare system and outside organizations. The Infection Control Manager establishes evidence-based practices and educational programs to ensure infection control is an ongoing, priority initiative throughout the healthcare system. In addition, the Infection Control Manager develops, recommends and works to implement both long- and short-term goals for the Infection Prevention Council. The Infection Control Manager will collate, analyze and disseminate surveillance information to the Infection Prevention Council and others within the organization as appropriate. In response to surveillance findings, the Infection Control Manager recommends and implements specific intervention measures to prevent infections. The Infection Control Manager works with specific departments to arrange for any follow-up and institute preventive measures when this is deemed necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads and is responsible for system-wide infection control prevention program.
  • Assists with system-wide patient safety program, with a focus on hospital acquired infection prevention.
  • Participates on the daily Operational Call.
  • Familiar with all DNV, CMS, state, and other regulatory reporting requirements relating to Infection Control.
  • Demonstrate understanding of infection control policies regarding hospital acquired infections, ECRI, and antibiotic stewardship.
  • Demonstrate understanding of interdepartmental processes and workflow to support infection control and prevention.
  • Ensures timely data collection and submission to CMS and other agencies.
  • Serves as the site administrator for NHSN and ensures all data submissions are accurate, complete, and timely.
  • Continues education and remains familiar and knowledgeable of the various CMS rules and regulations regarding infection control.
  • Oversees continuous DNV survey readiness for infection control.
  • Assists the Quality Director with performance excellence projects, as defined in the organizational strategic framework.
  • Serves as a representative on the system wide safety and patient safety committees.
  • Co-chairs the Infection Prevention Council.
  •  Responsible for maintenance of employee schedules and timecards for department,
    ensures timecards are completed timely on payroll Monday.
  • Sets and communicates clear performance expectations of team members and monitors by direct observation.
  • Responsible to complete probationary and annual evaluations.
  • Responsible to complete corrective action for employees as appropriate.
  • Participates in professional education programs as appropriate for professional and personal development.
  • Serves as an educational consultant as requested.
  • Designs and conducts meaningful surveillance programs in accordance with the objective of the Infection Prevention Council.
  • Statistically analyzes and prepares nosocomial surveillance reports for the Infection Prevention Council, Quality Committee, Medical Staff Committees, and other appropriate committees.
  • In response to surveillance findings, will work with appropriate persons to design and implement appropriate preventive strategies. In the absence of surveillance data confirming a problem, will work with appropriate persons to analyze situations and develop needed corrective actions.
  • Coordinates and ensures timely completion and compliance with rounding
    throughout Reid’s Organization.
  • Participates in general hospital orientation and regular in-service training to update personnel with current infection control guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Develops and implements programs to ensure compliance with current regulations and recommendations of IOSHA, DNV, ISDH, CDC, and other regulatory agencies as well as the hospital's insurance carrier.
  • Participates and communicates with infection control personnel in other hospitals and healthcare facilities within APIC Indiana and Ohio Chapters.
  • The Infection Control Manager assigns tasks to the Infection Control Practitioner including, but not limited to rounding, in the moment education, and auditing. 

Education and Experience
Education Required:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in health-related field or five (5) years of relevant experience in health-related field. Registered Nurse preferred.

Education Preferred:

  • Certification or eligibility for certification in infection control by the Certification Board of Infection Control and in Epidemiology, Inc.

Experience Required:

  • At least five years’ experience in a hospital or clinical setting which includes experience in quality assessment and improvement. Must be able to work in the suite of Microsoft office products—Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must have a working knowledge of computer equipment and software packages defined for standard use. Must be able to run electronic reports from clinical databases and evaluate the data for effective use in assessing quality.
  • Must be able to manage change needed in a fast-paced environment. Strength in organizational skills and attention to detail. Must be an effective communicator.
