General Statement of Work
The Community Center Coordinator plans, coordinates, and supervises a variety of athletic and leisure time activities for the citizens of the community while overseeing Community Center operations.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is devoted to providing recreation activities and facilities management. The Community Center Coordinator provides professional, journey-level recreation programming and facility management. This employee works as an assistant to staff overseeing the ongoing operations of recreation programs as related to Center usage. Work in this class requires extensive contact with the public through program offerings. Programs are highly focused around youth and teens and require specific experience and knowledge of that population. Work may include ensuring safety/risk management policies are followed, record-keeping, event planning, staff liaison, and customer service. Work involves considerable planning and scheduling of activities and contact with participants and temporary staff. The Community Center Coordinator is also responsible for ordering equipment and supplies and maintaining the appearance and safety of assigned grounds, buildings, and other facilities. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and policies and requires judgment and discretion in the application and interpretation of programs, game rules, and procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director/Assistant Director and is evaluated based on observation, feedback from the public, personal conferences, and the attainment of individual and department performance objectives.
- Plans, develops, coordinates, implements, and oversees recreation programming and facility management work; performs research, assesses community needs, and evaluates programs and activities; provides recommendations for program or process enhancements.
- Oversees and provides daily operational activity support of the Community Center, programs, and events.
- Books and manages rentals of Parks & Recreation Community Center facilities.
- Books, plans, and oversees special events at the Community Center and supervises all contracted programs.
- Responds to customer inquiries, concerns, or complaints; reviews customer feedback; researches, troubleshoots, and resolves issues; provides specialized customer service.
- Schedules employees for multiple Community Center programs.
- May serve as a representative on committees and as a liaison with program stakeholders.
- Performs administrative management support related to assigned area which may include updating and maintaining scheduling information; assisting with program registrations; planning and implementing program curriculum or itineraries; monitoring expenditures, financial records and budgets; processing payments; monitoring vendor contracts; and maintaining program- or facility-related files and information.
- Prepares presentations, outreach materials, newsletters, educational handouts, correspondence, and other related program or facility documentation.
- Monitors and evaluates equipment, supplies, and material needs; initiates purchase requisitions for new or replacement items.
- Develops, plans, and implements special projects, events, or tours.
- May serve as lead worker, assigning work and monitoring work completion.
- Oversees and supervises part-time staff including conducting performance reviews, coordinating training, implementing hiring and discipline procedures, and assisting with termination procedures.
- Oversees setup for programs and cleanup of facilities; maintains the appearance and safety of the Community Center.
- Supports athletic activities as needed.
- Oversees various programs including children’s sports and camp programs, including recruiting and assigning volunteer coaches and part-time staff, implementing activities, and resolving issues.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, or related degree. Experience in athletic programming; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
• Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
• CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications.
Physical Requirements
Work requires the frequent use of machinery, facility equipment, office computer, cell phone, and other office equipment. May be required to drive or operate motorized vehicles. The employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time with occasional bending or squatting. Employee should be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Employee is required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employee must have the visual acuity to perform frequent reading, to prepare and analyze data and figures, to perform close-up work, and to distinguish color and depth. Employee must also be able to hear and talk with others, either in person or on the phone, to communicate information.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment subject to typical office noise and environment as well as noise from operating recreational vehicles and other facility equipment. This position may also require working outside in extreme temperatures, moving equipment and supplies, some exposure to hazardous chemicals, and the use of personal protective equipment when assisting other program areas.
