Shape the Future of Mobility at Nissan: Launch Your Career, Drive Innovation

We are currently looking for a Machine Learning Research Intern to join our team in Santa Clara, CA. The EV & Energy Services team brings together machine learning researchers, data scientists, operations researchers, engineers, and business leaders to develop innovative solutions for smart cities infrastructure, EV charging orchestration, driver behavior modeling, battery health management, and next-generation mobility services.

This internship will support our Mobility Services initiatives by developing data-driven simulation and machine learning tools used to study high-utilization mobility fleets. Projects may involve modeling fleet operations, battery health, charging behavior, maintenance requirements, vehicle uptime, and business performance. This is an exciting opportunity for students who are passionate about applying advanced analytics and machine learning to real-world challenges in transportation, sustainability, and future mobility.

A Day in the Life:

  • Contribute to the development, training, validation, and optimization of machine learning and simulation models for mobility service applications.
  • Analyze vehicle, charging, fleet, and battery-related datasets to identify operational trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support the development of simulation tools used to evaluate fleet utilization, charging strategies, maintenance planning, battery health, and service availability.
  • Collaborate with researchers, data scientists, engineers, and business stakeholders on feature engineering, data processing, model evaluation, and KPI development.
  • Communicate findings through reports, dashboards, visualizations, presentations, and demonstrations to technical and business audiences.
  • Explore opportunities to contribute to patents, academic publications, open-source projects, and other intellectual property initiatives.

Who We’re Looking For:

Required:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD degree program in Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Robotics, Transportation Systems, or a related technical field.
  • Strong Python programming skills, including experience with data structures, algorithms, and data analysis workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning and data science tools such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, PySpark, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with machine learning, forecasting, optimization, simulation, or time-series analysis.
  • Strong interest in mobility services, electric vehicles, battery technologies, fleet operations, or sustainable transportation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, creativity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • GPA of 3.0 or above (Candidates will be required to provide an official or unofficial transcript during the application process for verification.)
  • Ability to perform work onsite in Santa Clara, CA.

Preferred:

  • PhD candidates within one year of graduation.
  • Experience with electric vehicles, battery management systems, smart charging, vehicle-to-grid technologies, or battery health modeling.
  • Experience with simulation, operations research, fleet modeling, mobility service platforms, or transportation systems.
  • Familiarity with cloud and machine learning platforms such as AWS, Snowflake, Databricks, MLflow, Docker, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with numerical optimization tools such as CVXPY, SciPy Optimize, Pyomo, or similar frameworks.
