Lead Software Engineer

Leidos is seeking an experienced Lead Software Engineer to join the Air Traffic Business to support the design, development, integration and delivery of modern software solutions at the integration center in Pune, India.  This role is ideal for a well-rounded software developer who brings strong traditional software engineering fundamentals along with experience or interest in developing and integrating AI-enabled capabilities.

 

The Lead Software Engineer will serve as a technical leader and work as part of an Agile development team to build scalable, secure, and reliable applications while leveraging modern development practices, cloud technologies, automation, and emerging artificial intelligence tools and frameworks.  The Software Engineer will work alongside cross-functional teams and technical leaders to delivery predictable outcomes in a highly regulated, safety critical environment. The candidate will work on software that directly supports air traffic operations, applying AI tools to accelerate development, improve quality, and enhance system reliability.

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

• Responsible for software development activities both individually and as a member of a team, including writing, testing, debugging, and maintaining source code within an Agile environment.
• Collaborate with software engineers, systems engineers, data scientists, product owners, and other technical stakeholders to translate requirements into working software.
• Work within Agile/Scrum development environments and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and technical design discussions.
• Participate throughout the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain high-quality software applications and services.
• Develop software using modern programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, C++, C#, or similar technologies.
• Develop automated unit, integration, and system tests to ensure software quality and reliability.
• Utilize modern DevOps and CI/CD practices to automate software builds, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
• Troubleshoot complex software issues and continuously improve application performance, scalability, maintainability, and security.
• Evaluate AI-generated outputs for accuracy, reliability, security, and performance

 

Basic Qualifications

 

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline with relevant professional software development experience. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
• 8+ years of relevant experience or a Master’s Degree and 6+ years of relevant experience
• Fluent in English (both verbal and written) to effectively collaborate with team members and present reports and status.
• Professional experience developing software using one or more modern programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, C++, or C#.
• Experience with object-oriented programming, software design principles, algorithms, data structures, and source control tools such as Git.
• Experience developing or integrating APIs, web services, microservices, or distributed applications.
• Experience with modern software development methodologies and the SDLC.
• Familiarity with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices.
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Understanding of cloud-based application development using AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Exposure to or experience with AI/ML, Generative AI, LLMs, or AI-enabled application development.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in the aviation industry or a similar high-tech field is a plus.
• Experience with large-scale distributed systems
• Experience working with safety critical or high availability software
• Experience integrating with legacy systems
• Experience reading and understanding large existing codebases
• Experience working in a global or multicultural environment is a plus
• Experience developing cloud-native applications and working with cloud-based AI services.
• Experience developing software in highly secure, regulated, mission-critical, or enterprise environments.
