SUMMARY: The Datacenter Specialist I provides primary technical support and administration for the County’s Microsoft applications and services, including Microsoft 365, Office applications, Exchange Online, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, and Intune. The position also supports County cybersecurity initiatives, including cybersecurity software and security tools, security updates, employee awareness and training, and cybersecurity campaigns. Additionally, the position supports the administration and maintenance of physical and virtual servers, storage, backup and recovery systems, and related network resources to ensure reliable and secure technology services throughout Nueces County.


REPORTS TO: The Datacenter Specialist I reports directly to the Network Operations Manager and provides datacenter support, cybersecurity support, and technical assistance within the organization under the direction of the Assistant Director and Director.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Administers and maintains user accounts, permissions, licenses, and access to Microsoft 365 services in accordance with established policies and procedures.


Provides technical support and administration for Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and related Microsoft products.


Supports the installation, configuration, updating, and troubleshooting of Microsoft Office applications and Microsoft 365 services.


Assist users with Microsoft application issues, account access, authentication, connectivity, and application functionality.


Administers Active Directory, including user and computer accounts, organizational units, Group Policy, permissions, authentication, and related directory services.


Administers Microsoft Entra ID, Exchange Online, Intune, and Azure, including user and group management, authentication, access controls, enterprise applications, device identities, and related identity and access management services.


Develops, maintains, and implements Group Policy, domain configurations, security policies, and other Active.


Directory configurations to support County requirements.


Applies security updates, patches, configuration changes, and other corrective measures to protect County systems and data.


Maintains current knowledge of cybersecurity practices, standards, technologies, and methodologies applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.


Administers and maintains County cybersecurity software and security tools, including configuration, monitoring, updates, user access, and routine troubleshooting.


Assists with the planning, coordination, and implementation of County cybersecurity initiatives and awareness programs.


Coordinates and supports annual cybersecurity awareness and training requirements for County employees, including scheduling, communications, participation tracking, and completion reporting.


Provides basic cybersecurity guidance and support to County employees and departments regarding security policies, procedures, and safe use of County technology resources.


Administers, maintains, and monitors the County’s physical and virtual server infrastructure to ensure availability, reliability, performance, and security.


Performs scheduled and corrective maintenance, updates, patches, migrations, and repairs to servers, applications, and related infrastructure while minimizing service disruptions.


Administers and monitors enterprise backup systems to ensure the integrity, availability, and recoverability of critical County data and systems.


Ensures the backup and recovery of data, applications, and system configurations are performed as required and scheduled.


Investigates backup and recovery failures and takes corrective action to maintain reliable recovery capabilities.


Provides technical support during system recovery, outages, and other infrastructure-related incidents.


Maintains knowledge of current technologies, industry best practices, and improved methodologies to support the ongoing reliability, security, and efficiency of the County’s technology infrastructure.


Provides technical support for information technology projects and helpdesk activities, including complex or escalated issues, as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Required qualifications are: 1) a Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Computer Science or Management Information Systems, plus at least two year of experience in datacenter management; or 2) an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science from an accredited community/junior college, plus at least three years of experience in datacenter management; or 3) certification in a related field, plus at least three years of experience in datacenter management; or 4) at least five years of experience in datacenter management.


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and Commissioners’ Court.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Class-C Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License,.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: This position requires reasonable knowledge of network hardware, computer systems, and software related to a wide range of information systems and technology, including personal computers and peripherals, dedicated network servers, workstations, data communications, and Internet services.


Specifically, this position requires knowledge of local area network (LAN) technologies, Windows operating systems, Active Directory-Azure Systems (AD), Group Policy (GP), VMware and Storage technologies, knowledge of MS Exchange, SQL Server, preferred basic network knowledge.


Must possess excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.


Must have excellent interpersonal skills in working with County employees and system users.


Must be able to deal effectively with management, including directors and department heads, in determining goals and objectives and in developing plans to implement advanced technology designed to solve a wide range of operational needs.


Must be able to work independently, or as part of a team, to accomplish complex, detailed work.


Must be able to listen effectively and carry out instructions.
