AXIS is seeking a Senior Claims Specialist - Casualty & Specialty to join our Canada Claims Team. This role involves direct handling of complex primary and excess claims under our General Liability, Design Professional Errors & Omissions and other specialty policies. The successful candidate will bring strong technical claims expertise, sound judgement and the ability to navigate complex coverage, liability and damages, and litigation issues.  This individual will work closely with insureds, brokers, external counsel, underwriting partners and claims leadership to drive claims toward efficient and appropriate resolution.

This role will be responsible for:

Direct handling primary and excess casualty and specialty claims, including claims under General Liability, Design Professional E&O, Miscellaneous E&O and other specialty policies.

Investigating and analyzing liability, damages and insurance coverage issues.

Drafting and communicating clear, well-supported coverage positions and settlement rationales to insureds, brokers and legal counsel.

Assessing exposure, establishing and maintaining accurate reserves, and strategically guiding litigated and non-litigated matters towards efficient resolution.

Assigning and managing external vendors including legal counsel by providing budget and billing oversight, driving litigation strategy, and collaborating with internal Vendor Management teams to enhance cost management efforts.

Collaborating with insureds and defence counsel to advance the defence and resolution of claims, including participating in settlement negotiations, mediations and settlement conferences, presenting well-reasoned positions and negotiating outcomes that reflect overall exposure.

Maintaining open and professional communication with broker partners and insureds on claim-related activity, and keeping internal stakeholders informed of significant developments, trends, and large loss activity.

Maintaining high standards and timely file documentation, ensuring each file reflects a clear and complete rationale for all claims decisions, including coverage determinations, exposure assessments, reserves and file strategy.

Acting as a technical resource and mentor to peers, contributing to a culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.

Contributing to internal initiatives, process enhancements, and training sessions.

KEY SKILLS & ABILITIES:5-7+ years of experience in claims handling, litigation, or related legal/insurance roles, with exposure to both primary and excess casualty and specialty lines.

Demonstrated analytical, investigative and negotiation skills, with the ability to evaluate coverage, liability, damages and claim resolution options. In-depth knowledge of claims, litigation, and trial processes.Ability to influence and collaborate at all organizational levels, both internally and externally as well as the ability to identify and resolve complex, disputed claims

Demonstrated organizational and technical skills as well as a deep understanding of casualty and specialty lines coverage and claim resolution strategies.

Understanding of and ability to balance both the immediate claim issues as well as the broader portfolio impact and customer service impact of coverage disputes and issues.

Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with people with conflicting expectations, differing opinions, and multiple viewpoints.

Post-secondary education in law, insurance, business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Post-secondary education in a relevant field (e.g., insurance, law, business) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CIP or Law Degree is considered an asset.French language skills are considered an asset.

Ability to work in the office three days per week and attend occasional travel or off-site meetings.
