Production Operator III

This position is the advanced-level position in the Production Operator series. The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform perform highly technical and specialized work tasks in production system operations and maintenance with minimal supervision. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the production supervisor with leeway granted for independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment, which may involve adverse weather conditions, roadway traffic, related hazards, and confined spaces.

• Performs water quality sampling and ground water well operations to ensure proper operation as well as hydraulic testing to provide flow capabilities to keep up with system demands.
• Operates, maintains, and repairs the City's well sites, booster stations, and reservoirs.
• Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on chlorination systems, wells, pumps, motors, and disinfection equipment; cleans, paints, and repairs well house.
• Performs miscellaneous maintenance tasks on a periodic basis, such as weed abatement, sprinkler replacement, painting, and cleaning at city owned production facilities.
• Operates and monitors Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system; makes operational changes as needed.
• Completes daily rounds of production facilities; monitors safety and security of sites.
• Operates distribution and transmission valves to ensure proper position.
• Prepares reports to facilitate compliant operation of the public water system.
• Operates valves and water mains in the field using electronic detection equipment.
• Calibrates and performs preventative maintenance on water quality monitoring equipment and disinfection systems.
• May be required to respond and work during emergency conditions.
• Operates and maintains water supply, water quality, and energy efficiency throughout our water distribution system.
• Performs line location of the City’s underground facilities.
• Participates in meter and main shut-offs and turn-ons of water service.
• Investigates water pressure and quality complaints, refers complaints to proper service areas and troubleshoots equipment problems.
• Leads and trains staff in water quality sampling activities to maintain the public water system's compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.
• Participates in special projects required by the Safe Drinking Water Act or the needs of the City.
• Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
• Consistently keeps supervisor and relevant team members informed about work progress, current and potential issues, and proactively suggests new or improved solutions to address challenges.
• Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions, and reviews materials to remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas.
• Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
• Communicates and coordinates regularly with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
• May serves as back-up Line locater.
• Performs building and grounds maintenance for the water department.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education, Training, and/or Experience Required:

• Graduation from High School or completion of a GED.
• At least two years of work experience in pipe or maintenance construction; or experience in water distribution system construction, maintenance or repair.

Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements:

• Possession of a current and valid driver’s license.
• Possession of a Class B CDL, No Restrictions with Tanker Endorsement.
• Class III Water Distribution Operator issued by the State of Idaho.
• Must be available for a mandatory on-call rotation and able to work evenings, weekends, and varying shift hours.
• Successful completion of pre-employment background check, physical, and drug test to include prescription medications.
• Subject to random DOT drug and alcohol testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Class I-II Water Treatment Operator license issued by the State of Idaho.
• Class A CDL, No Restrictions with Tanker Endorsement
