Position Overview
Whip is seeking an experienced Liability Bodily Injury (BI) Claims Adjuster to support our growing auto insurance claims operations. This role is responsible for investigating, evaluating, negotiating, and resolving third-party bodily injury claims arising from automobile accidents involving our rental fleet.
The ideal candidate brings a strong background in auto liability claims, experience evaluating bodily injury exposures, and the ability to independently manage claims from initial investigation through resolution. Experience handling Personal Injury Protection (PIP) claims is highly preferred.
This position requires a detail-oriented claims professional with strong investigative skills, sound judgment, and the ability to effectively manage complex claims while ensuring fair, accurate, and cost-effective outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Bodily Injury Claims Investigation & Evaluation
- Manage third-party bodily injury claims from initial assignment through resolution, including investigation, evaluation, negotiation, and settlement.
- Conduct thorough liability investigations, including obtaining statements, reviewing police reports, analyzing accident circumstances, and evaluating supporting evidence.
- Review medical records, medical bills, treatment histories, and supporting documentation to assess injury severity, causation, and damages.
- Evaluate liability, comparative negligence, and potential coverage issues to establish appropriate claim strategies.
- Identify pre-existing conditions, treatment gaps, unrelated medical expenses, and other factors relevant to injury evaluations.
- Establish and maintain accurate claim reserves based on documented exposures and evolving claim information.
- Recognize potentially fraudulent, exaggerated, or questionable claims and refer them for additional investigation when appropriate.
Claims Negotiation & Resolution
- Evaluate bodily injury demands and develop well-supported settlement recommendations.
- Negotiate settlements directly with claimants, attorneys, and other involved parties within assigned authority.
- Prepare detailed settlement evaluations supported by medical documentation, liability assessments, and applicable jurisdictional considerations.
- Identify opportunities for early claim resolution while protecting the company from unnecessary financial exposure.
- Manage litigated claims in coordination with defense counsel, including reviewing litigation strategies, evaluating settlement opportunities, and monitoring legal expenses.
- Ensure claims are resolved in accordance with applicable regulations, company guidelines, and established settlement authority.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Claims — Preferred Experience
- Review and evaluate PIP claims, including medical bills, treatment records, wage loss documentation, and other applicable benefits.
- Assess benefit eligibility, policy limits, medical necessity, and the relationship between claimed treatment and the reported accident.
- Identify duplicate billing, unsupported treatment, excessive charges, and other potential billing discrepancies.
- Coordinate with medical providers, claimants, attorneys, and other insurers to obtain documentation and resolve outstanding issues.
- Apply applicable state-specific PIP regulations, coverage requirements, and benefit limitations.
Claims Management & Collaboration
- Maintain a portfolio of active bodily injury claims, prioritizing high-severity exposures and time-sensitive matters.
- Document all claim activity, investigative findings, evaluations, settlement negotiations, and resolution decisions within the claims management system.
- Monitor claim reserves and proactively identify changes in exposure.
- Collaborate with liability, property damage, PIP, and operations teams to ensure coordinated claim handling.
- Identify potential subrogation, contribution, or recovery opportunities.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with claimants, attorneys, insurance carriers, medical providers, and internal stakeholders.
- Ensure timely claim handling and compliance with applicable state insurance regulations and internal service standards.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience handling automobile bodily injury liability claims, preferably with an insurance carrier, third-party administrator (TPA), or self-insured organization.
- Demonstrated experience independently investigating, evaluating, negotiating, and resolving third-party bodily injury claims.
- Strong understanding of negligence, liability determinations, comparative fault, bodily injury damages, and settlement practices.
- Experience reviewing medical records, analyzing treatment, and evaluating injury-related damages.
- Proven ability to manage attorney-represented claims and negotiate settlements.
- Experience establishing, monitoring, and adjusting claim reserves.
- Strong understanding of claims investigation procedures, documentation standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Ability to independently manage a high-volume claims inventory while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with claims management systems and standard business software.
- Ability to obtain or maintain applicable claims adjuster licenses as required.
Salary: $75k - $85k (depending on experience)
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience handling Personal Injury Protection (PIP) claims, particularly in Maryland or other no-fault jurisdictions.
- Experience reviewing medical bills, assessing treatment necessity, and identifying billing irregularities.
- Experience handling moderate-to-complex bodily injury claims, including litigated and attorney-represented matters.
- Familiarity with commercial auto insurance, rideshare operations, rental vehicles, or transportation-related liability claims.
- Experience working within a self-insured organization, risk retention group (RRG), or third-party claims administration environment.
- Familiarity with multi-state auto liability claims and jurisdiction-specific insurance requirements.
- Experience using Snapsheet or similar claims management platforms.
- Relevant claims adjuster designations or professional certifications.
- Experience working in startup or fast-paced environments, with the ability to wear multiple hats, adapt to evolving priorities, and contribute to the development and improvement of operational processes.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for an experienced, analytical, and proactive claims professional who can independently manage bodily injury exposures and make sound, defensible claims decisions.
The successful candidate will have strong investigative instincts, excellent negotiation skills, and the ability to critically evaluate injury claims rather than simply processing them. They should be comfortable challenging unsupported demands, identifying inconsistencies, and developing resolution strategies supported by the facts of each claim.
We value individuals who take ownership of their claims, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and understand the importance of balancing fair claim settlements with responsible financial management.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in strengthening Whip's internal claims operations and helping build a more efficient, disciplined, and scalable claims organization.
