PURPOSE

The Carpenter position performs carpentry, repair, renovation and general maintenance through university housing facilities, supporting safe and functional resident halls and apartments. The position reports to the Islander Housing Facilities Director and works collaboratively with other departmental staff to ensure a safe and comfortable living environment for residents.


DESCRIPTION

Functional Area 1: Maintenance

Percent Effort: 65%

  • Framing and carpentry repairs
  • Repair/Install doors and frames
  • Cabinets, countertops, trim, baseboard and shelving
  • Flooring and hardware repair
  • Drywall installation and repair
  • Repair walls, partitions, ceilings and building components
  • Renovation and remodel projects
  • Operate carpentry and hand power tools
  • Operate a TAMUCC vehicle and/or golf cart to navigate to and from worksites.

 

Functional Area 2: Administrative

Percent Effort: 30%

  • Attend departmental meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Complete routine and emergency work orders
  • Follow safety procedures and building / fire codes
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and University policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with housing leadership, residents, staff, and contractors to resolve maintenance issues and maintain positive relationships.

 

Functional Area 3: Other

Percent Effort: 5%

 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years of experience in carpentry, maintenance, repair, or construction work.
  • Additional education may be used as a substitute for the minimum experience requirement
    • Associate degree and one (1) year experience in carpentry, maintenance, repair, or construction work.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Strong technical knowledge of carpentry.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex maintenance issues.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to maintenance work.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to perform physical work



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three to five (3-5) years carpentry experience especially in University housing, apartments or schools.
  • Basic drywall, painting, light plumbing, and general maintenance knowledge.
  • Maintenance work in a university setting is preferred.
  • Trade school certification or relevant work experience preferred.

SALARY: up to $25/hourly

  • up to $52,000/annually, approximately
