Histology Lab Technician/Assistant (HPCSA Qualified)

Role Description

We are seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Histology Laboratory Assistant/Scientist at Drs Hainsworth, Purcell & Associates (Lancet Laboratories) in Durban. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing and assisting with a wide range of histological techniques, and ensuring the accuracy and quality of laboratory processes in alignment with international standards.

Qualifications/Skills

• HPCSA registration as a Medical Technician/Scientist (compulsoray)
• Diploma/Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related fields (optional)
• Proven experience in a histology laboratory environment
• Strong knowledge of tissue processing, staining, and slide preparation techniques
• Excellent attention to detail, organisational, and time-management skills
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare, process, and embed tissue specimens for histological analysis, including cut-up (put-through)
• Perform sectioning using microtomy and prepare slides for routine and special staining
• Operate and maintain histology equipment, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards
• Assist in troubleshooting technical issues and optimising workflows.
• Follow established Standard Operating Procedures and contribute to their development and continuous improvement
• Ensure adherence to biosafety, ethical, and confidentiality guidelines in handling patient samples
• Assist with stock control and reagent preparation
• Collaborate with pathologists, scientists, and laboratory staff to ensure efficient work environments
• Frozen sectioning (advantageous)
