The Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center is seeking a Special Education Teacher (Master's Level) to join our team. This position is a terrific opportunity for someone to gain additional experience and make a difference in the lives of our clients.

For over 45 forty-five years, our organization has provided mental health and holistic services in northern Manhattan for families, children, adolescents, and other adults including the elderly in a supportive and caring environment. We also have an out-patient and residential substance abuse program as well as a Therapeutic Preschool for 3-5 year olds. 

Upper Manhattan Mental Health Center is a Certified National Health Service Corps (NHSC) site.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Special Education Teacher (Master's Level)

Location: Children Day Treatment Program

Hours: 35 hrs./week, Monday - Friday

Union: Union position

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide for the educational and cognitive needs of children, through curriculum planning, direct instruction, classroom management, etc.
• Supervise assistant teachers in their work with program clients in the classroom.
• Participate in case conferences and in-service staff training sessions.
• Meet with parents to discuss their child’s cognitive growth and development within the classroom.
• Maintain record of child’s educational progress.
• Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.
• Perform annual assessments and write IEP goals and objectives
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Children’s Services and /or designee.

Requirements

 Education and/or Work Experience Requirements: 

• Has passed the following Teacher Certification Exams: LAST, ATS and Students with Disabilities Master Degree.
• Have familiarity with IEP’s in order to ensure that the goals are met through daily instruction.
• Have knowledge and understanding of behavioral interventions in the classroom for children with behavioral problems.
• Have knowledge of the various disabilities that will be encountered in the classroom.
