Context

It is rare to find an infrastructure project immune to budget and political cycles, but this one has a career horizon stretching all the way to 2086. We are looking for a Portals Lead Engineer to join the Newcastle–Sydney HSR corridor—a 100% renewable, greenfield network that is setting a new global standard for engineering excellence.

Missions/Main Duties

In this role, you will be the technical pivot point between the open rail corridor and the tunnel environment. You will own the design of critical portal structures, including TBM launch and reception boxes and cut-and-cover transitions, ensuring that the most complex interfaces of the project are delivered with precision and constructability in mind.

Profile/Skills

  • Lead the design of all tunnel portal structures, including cut-and-cover transition sections, TBM launch and reception boxes, and the transition from open rail corridor to the tunnel environment.

  • Develop geotechnical and structural designs for portal excavation support systems, such as secant pile walls, diaphragm walls, and king post walls.

  • Ensure designs reflect contractor-preferred construction methods and site-specific ground conditions.

  • Manage the complex civil and structural interfaces at portal locations between tunnel civil works, surface corridors (earthworks, drainage, highways), and the permanent rail envelope.

  • Lead risk assessments for portal construction activities adjacent to existing road and rail crossings, utilities, and structures.

  • Identify requirements for settlement monitoring, temporary works restrictions, and staged construction sequences.

  • Co-ordinate portal design with the overarching tunnel waterproofing and drainage strategy to ensure continuity across the transition.

  • Produce portal design packages through ECI and detailed design, managing key interfaces with the Running Tunnels Lead, Civils design team, and Rail Systems Lead.

If you are ready to put the "greenest thing possible" on your CV and lead a technical legacy that moves the needle for decades to come, we want to hear from you.
