Job Title: Fitness Program Lead
Salary Range: $18.00-$23.00/DOE
Grade: Full Time | Non-Exempt
Hours: Must be willing to work various shifts, rotating weekends and be on call as needed
Reports To: Park & Recreation Coordinator
Position Summary
The position is responsible for the fitness program of the municipal health and fitness center, including front desk operations, fitness programming, aquatic instruction, staff scheduling, customer service, membership services, facility operations, financial reporting, and employee supervision. This position serves as the primary point of contact for patrons and ensures the delivery of safe, professional, and high-quality recreation, fitness, and aquatic programs for the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Fitness Programming
- Develops, plans, and implements a variety of exercise and fitness programs including but not limited to aerobic step programs, Pilates, Zumba, Silver Sneakers, spinning, strength training, water aerobics, yoga, gymnastics, and core classes.
- Maintains a safe environment and closely supervises participants to ensure their safety throughout programs and/or classes; monitors the safe and proper use of equipment and facilities.
- Communicates with participants regarding program objectives, goals, and activities.
- Resolves program issues within established guidelines.
- Maintains exercise equipment and facilities in clean and orderly condition including securing equipment and materials at the end of the workday; inspects equipment, supplies, and facilities daily to ensure that they are safe for public use; performs upkeep and maintenance as needed; reports items that require repair or replacement.
- Issues and collects equipment and supplies.
- Maintains an encouraging environment for program participants.
- Maintains and prepares a variety of records and reports including attendance.
- Enforces facility safety rules and regulations; interprets and applies policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations applicable to area of assignment.
- May perform general office duties including greeting patrons, light typing, data entry, copying, and filing; assists with the development of promotional brochures and fliers by providing program information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Facility Operations
- Ensure the facility is clean, safe, welcoming, and operating efficiently.
- Monitor facility usage and address operational issues as they arise.
- Enforce facility policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Conduct routine inspections of fitness and aquatic areas.
- Coordinate maintenance requests and repairs with appropriate individuals.
Front Desk & Customer Service
- Assist with front desk operations on a daily basis.
- Greet and check-in members and guests in a friendly and professional manner.
- Address member concerns, complaints, and service issues promptly and professionally.
- Process memberships, registrations, and reservations.
- Maintain accurate customer and membership records.
Staff Supervision & Scheduling
- Train, supervise, and evaluate part-time and seasonal fitness staff.
- Prepare employee work schedules and ensure adequate staffing levels.
- Provide coaching, training, and performance feedback.
- Assist with employee disciplinary actions in coordination with the Parks and Rec Coordinator.
Financial Management
- Assist in the processing of daily cash handling, deposits, and reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate financial records and reports.
- Track memberships, and program participation.
- Assist with annual budget preparation for fitness needs.
- Prepare fitness operational reports.
- Recommend pricing adjustments and revenue-generating opportunities.
Program Development & Administration
- Plan, implement, and evaluate recreation, fitness, and wellness programs.
- Maintain program registrations and participation records.
- Seek opportunities to increase membership and program participation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of recreation, fitness, wellness, and aquatic program operations.
- Knowledge of cash handling procedures.
- Ability to supervise, train, and motivate employees.
- Strong customer service and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to organize multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer software, registration systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with employees, patrons, and community members.
- Knowledge of risk management and safety procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Associate's Degree in Recreation Management, Exercise Science, Sports Management, or a related field preferred.
Experience
- One year of progressively responsible experience in recreation, fitness, aquatics, facility management, customer service, or related field.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
Certifications
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of employment, Personal Trainer Certificate.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of employment, Group Exercise Instructor certificate.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of employment, certification as a Zumba and Silver Sneakers instructor.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment, First Aid and CPR/AED certification issued by the American Red Cross.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to demonstrate fitness equipment and swimming techniques.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as required.
- Ability to work in both office and aquatic environments.
